Russian deserters the Ukraine Conflict hundreds of them forming their own colony. A self-sustaining grouping of disaffected, angry and discouraged young men. 

"The Russian deserters were noticed by residents of Borova, a small town near the city of Izyum, close to Kharkiv. Borova community council in turn wrote about them on social media."

“'They (the Russians) came back here – injured, covered with dirt, hungry, full of anger, with their equipment damaged,' an official with the council wrote."

“'Then they found a place for refuge in our village to recover. We have information that approximately 200 Russians are now hiding in the woods close to our village. They’re being sought by their commanders.'”

SURVIVAL FROM THIS POINT ONWARD BASED ON SCROUNGING, SCAVENGING, BEGGING AND EVEN STEALING AT GUNPOINT FROM THE LOCALS. MILITARY DESERTERS IN SUCH A  SITUATION. DESPERATE MEN WHO WILL IF NECESSARY RESORT TO DESPERATE MEASURES!

Read the experience of such military deserters during the Great War [WW1]. A practice not common but not so uncommon either. Referred to as apocrypha but I prefer to think more real than not.

Need I say to anybody what the fate of these men will be if they are repatriated to Russia?
