Mid-Range.

This is coolbert:

Consideration to me this a revelation. Advanced missile systems US Army.

System apparently fast-tracked and now deployable. Mid-Range Capability [MRC].

fast-track: "verb - to speed up the processing, production, or construction of in order to meet a goal"

1. "US Army deploys midrange missile for first time in Philippines"

https://www.defensenews.com        By Jen Judson        Apr 16, 2024. image courtesy US Army.

"The Mid-Range Capability missile has landed in Luzon, Philippines, as part of the Salaknib exercise taking place there, marking the first deployment of the new capability deemed vital for the U.S. Army’s strategy in the region."

SM-6 and Tomahawk! Normally missiles only in the inventory of the US Navy. Not ordinarily and regularly part and parcel of US Army inventory. Until now! SM-6 evidently now can be used in the surface-to-surface mode of attack! Tomahawk missiles probably of the land-attack version.

Training exercise the Philippines. Not permanently deployed. [click on image to see an enlarged view]

And now this:

2. "Philippines Says US Mid-range Missile System To Be Pulled Out"

https://www.barrons.com        By AFP - Agence France Presse        July 4, 2024

"A US mid-range missile system deployed in the Philippines for annual joint military exercises -- to the annoyance of China -- will be pulled out of the country, a Philippine Army spokesman said Thursday."

The mere presence of the Mid-Range system a source of irritation and aggravation to the Chinese? You can reasonably infer then this missile apparatus seen as a significant danger? If the Chinese do not like it then MRC must be good?

YES, fear the reaper!

Procedural.

This is coolbert:

“All men are brothers, like the seas throughout the world; So why do winds and waves clash so fiercely everywhere?” - Hirohito.

Testing the waters so to speak?

“'testing the waters' means to try out an idea, plan, or proposal to gauge people’s reactions or opinions before committing to it."

"Japanese destroyer enters Chinese waters despite warnings"

"A Japanese official suggested the possibility that the entry was a 'procedural error.' However, a Chinese security expert has expressed doubt about this explanation."

 From https://www.israelhayom.com |  By  Miri Weissman |  07-10-2024 | image courtesy Getty.

"A Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) destroyer briefly entered Chinese territorial waters off the eastern province of Zhejiang, despite repeated warnings from Chinese vessels, according to Kyodo News. The incident has led to severe concerns from Beijing and prompted an investigation by the Japanese Defense Ministry."

"The destroyer Suzutsuki, which was tasked with monitoring Chinese military drills on the high seas, sailed into Chinese waters on July 4. This rare move by a Self-Defense Forces vessel occurred just a day after Zhejiang authorities announced a no-sail zone [NOTAM] nearby for a Chinese military live-fire drill."

Areas of the East China Sea indeed territorial sovereignty disputed. This "procedural error" planned I might infer. Think the Senkaku Islands and immediate environs.

As with regard to the comment of Hirohito:

Think Gaza/Taiwan/South China Sea/Ukraine. Did I miss anything?

Indeed, waves clashing so fiercely and I dread the thought of much more clashing on a world-wide scale!

Minerva II.

This is coolbert:

"At sea one day, you'll smell land where there'll be no land, and on that day Ahab will go to his grave, but he'll rise again within the hour. He will rise and beckon. Then all - all save one shall follow. "

The gauntlet is thrown? All over a speck of land only visible above the water line at low tide.

Battle of the South China Sea? Second Thomas Shoal

"China anchors 'monster ship' in South China Sea: Philippine coast guard"

From https://www.japantimes.co.jp | REUTERS  |  Jul 8, 2024.

"MANILA – The Philippine Coast Guard said on Saturday that China's largest coast guard vessel has anchored in Manila's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea, and is meant to intimidate its smaller Asian neighbor."

"The Chinese coast guard's 165-meter [about 540 feet] 'monster ship' entered Manila's 200-nautical mile (370-kilometer) EEZ on July 2, Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela told a news conference.

CHINESE VESSEL ESTABLISHING A KNOWN PRESENCE AT SECOND THOMAS SHOAL PERMANENT TO SEMI-PERMANENT. A PROCLAMATION OF SOVEREIGNTY! A BRAZEN CHALLENGE THAT CANNOT BE IGNORED.

To an extent this reminds me of the Minerva Reef Incident from way back when:

"In 1971, a wealthy Nevada real estate mogul, Michael Oliver, attempted to create a libertarian micronation on the reefs, which he declared as the Republic of Minerva. However, Tonga had already issued a claim over the land, and Oliver’s efforts were ultimately unsuccessful."

Michael Oliver and his compatriots their plans ambitious to say the least but resulting in very quick Tongan military intervention and ultimate expulsion.

"Some damn fool thing in the South China Sea" - Bismarck.

Let Ahab beware Ahab!

Sun Ke.

This is coolbert:

“'These people suffer the most from being without a country, and for more than 2,600 years they have moved about homeless,' . . .  'The British want to set up a permanent settlement in Palestine,'. . . 'but this has provoked vehement opposition from the Arabs there, and the violence has not yet died down.'” - Sun Ke.

The Promised Land China? China? Consider this blog entry to be a borderline topic but interesting nonetheless.

Herewith an oddity and curiosity of history:

"How a Brooklyn dentist almost formed a Jewish homeland in pre-WW II China"

"Seeing a land free of antisemitism, Albert Einstein and Chinese leaders pushed plans to settle 100,000 Jews fleeing Nazis in Yunnan, the Himalayan foothills of China’s hinterland"

From https://www.timesofisrael.com | By HARRY SAUNDERS |  6/29/24.

"FOREIGN POLICY — On March 7, 1939, China’s top legislative official, Sun Ke, filed a dispatch to the government’s Civil Affairs Office. As a member of the Supreme Council for National Defense, he had spent the previous two years searching for ways to give China a fighting chance against the invading Japanese. Now, Sun Ke wanted to brief his colleagues on a seemingly unrelated issue: the plight of the Jewish people."

"Sun Ke believed that a more suitable refuge could be found in his own country. Not in Shanghai, where 20,000 Jews had already fled, but in the Himalayan foothills of China’s hinterland. With Laos to the south and what was then called Burma to the west, Yunnan was a border province with an unusually temperate climate, staggering natural beauty, and enough uncultivated land to accommodate 100,000 Jews fleeing Nazi persecution. What it lacked in scriptural significance, it made up for with its history free of antisemitic violence."

Idea of Sun Ke never came to fruition! Probably a no-starter from the beginning.

Lambasts.

This is coolbert:

The Dutch navy in action the East China Sea? The Dutch? Nothing like this has occurred since the Dutch Golden Age and the trade monopoly the Hollander had with Japan?

"China Intercepts Dutch Chopper Near Shanghai, Lambasts Netherlands for Provocation"

"The Dutch military has created a dangerous situation in the East China Sea after using a UN mission as a cover-up, Chinese Ministry of Defense representative Zhang Xiaogang has said."

Strange that you would find a Dutch naval vessel on active mission the East China Sea? Not hard to understand if the warship helping to enforce United Nations mandated blockade of North Korea. And this is exactly the case.

Bubbles.

This is coolbert:

More research needed. OH good. We are saved. And if so existing technology will suffice.

"US nuclear submarine weak spot in bubble trail: Chinese scientists"

"Extremely low frequency electromagnetic signal produced by speeding subs can be picked up by available devices, researchers say"

"A study published in one of China’s most respected peer-reviewed journals suggests that advanced submarines could be detected by existing technology, a development that would threaten US dominance of the oceans."

Comments:

* That the normally very security conscious Chinese would allow any of this public surprising?

* Weak spot American submarines [if indeed this be true] also a weak spot for the Chinese?

Killer.

 This is coolbert:

He who controls the micro-electronic semi-conductor industry controls the world?

Currently 80 % of advanced micro-electronic semi-conductor originate from Taiwan fabrication facilities.

Capturing intact those semi-conductor assembly and production lines presumably a major goal for Chinese communist military units in case of invasion Taiwan.

Cables.

This is coolbert:

If you can REPAIR an undersea cable carrying Internet traffic, you can DAMAGE one just as easy. Simple as that.

"Fears Mount Of Undersea Cable Sabotage By Chinese Repair Ships, Report Says"

From https://www.zerohedge.com | BY TYLER DURDEN | MAY 19, 2024.  https://tinyurl.com/mr328x4n

State Department officials told a team of Wall Street Journal reporters about the increasing risks that undersea telecommunications cables could be susceptible to espionage.

Not could be. Are! Breakage common even without human interference!

The officials became concerned when a state-controlled Chinese firm that repairs undersea cables, SB Submarine Systems, unexplainably and repeatedly concealed the location data of its ship from radio and satellite tracking services. They said the ship's concealment of its position 'defied easy explanation'"

No! Not defying easy explanation. They were up to something nefarious.

"The warnings about potential espionage or even sabotage of undersea cables come nearly three months after underwater telecommunications cables linking Europe and Asia were 'damaged' in the Red Sea between Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and Djibouti in East Africa."

See previous blog entry as relevant the fleet of vessels of various nations on constant mission to repair undersea cables where ever they occur and when damaged.  https://tinyurl.com/y2kc7v7s

NOR can you preclude the possibility of bad actors intercepting fiber optic Internet communications [without destroying the cable] for intelligence gathering purposes. "Fiber tapping uses a network tap method that extracts signal from an optical fiber without breaking the connection."

"BEIJING (AP) – Australia on Saturday accused the Chinese navy of likely causing minor injuries to Australian naval divers by operating its sonar while they were trying to clear fishing nets from their ship’s propellers."

"The Australian government has expressed its serious concerns to the Chinese government over what it called the unsafe and unprofessional conduct earlier this week, Defense Minister Richard Marles said in a statement on his official website."

"The HMAS Toowoomba stopped in international waters on Tuesday in Japan’s exclusive economic zone [EEZ] after fishing nets became entangled in its propellers, the defense minister’s statement said. The naval frigate had been helping to enforce U.N. sanctions in the region."

"As diving operations were underway, a Chinese destroyer moved toward the Australian ship and was detected operating its hull-mounted sonar in a way that posed a risk to the divers and forced them to get out of the water, the statement said."

This is coolbert:

Snared in a trap of their own devising. Chinese PLAN big time egg on face?

"'Egg on face' is an American English idiom that means to appear stupid or foolish when something goes wrong . . . It implies making an embarrassing error or blunder in public, since making an error in private isn't embarrassing.

"EXCLUSIVE: 55 Chinese sailors are feared dead after nuclear submarine 'gets caught in a trap intended to snare British and US vessels in the Yellow Sea'"

"China's Shipbuilding Capacity More Than 200 Times Greater Than US: Leaked Navy Slide"

From https://www.zerohedge.com | TYLER DURDEN | via J.M.Phelps of The Epoch Times SEP 25, 2023.

"A leaked U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) slide is garnering concern about the Chinese regime’s continued capability to produce naval vessels at an alarmingly faster rate than the United States."

Think not just at an alarming rate. Think at a mind-boggling greater rate!

Chinese shipbuilding capacity about two-hundred thirty times that of the USA. Chinese have a force also where commercial vessels can serve a dual-purpose [quasi-military] in a traditional sea-power role.

The Chinese too in time of conflict with USA able to concentrate their naval assets [bolstered by commercial dual-purpose vessels] in one general location, presenting an overwhelming numerical advantage.

As was with Jack Ma so too will it be with Li Shangfu. Here yesterday, gone today? Purged? Out of favor? Banished? It is all unclear.

"Missing Chinese defense chief signals turmoil in Xi's government"

From https://www.japantimes.co.jp | the article JESSE JOHNSON | STAFF WRITER | Sep 15, 2023.

"The United States believes Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu has been placed under investigation and relieved of his command, reports said Friday, in what could be the latest sign of turmoil in Chinese leader Xi Jinping's government, just over six months after he installed a collection of loyalist leaders in his Cabinet."

"Three U.S. officials and two people briefed on intelligence surrounding Li told the Financial Times that Washington has concluded that the defense chief, who took up his post in March, had been stripped of his responsibilities."

Jack Ma of Alibaba having made what was perceived as a mild criticism of the Chinese Communist party ruling elite disappearing for a period of weeks or months without a trace. Jack at the time of his   vanishing one of the richest men in the world. Hump.

This is coolbert:

From the outstanding Internet web site "Bayou Renaissance Man" we have this item.

"Weekend Wings #10: Flying The Hump"

From https://bayourenaissanceman.blogspot.com | March 9, 2008.

"Air transport today - whether civilian or military - is a complex, seamless web of people, machinery, locations and infrastructure. We take it for granted that we can ship anything anywhere in the world within a day or two, provided only that it can be broken down into loads that will fit onto an aircraft."

[....]

"World War II was the catalyst in developing our modern air infrastructure. During the war huge networks of intercontinental air travel were developed: new methods of freight handling and mass passenger transport were devised: and the experience gained by tens of thousands of service personnel formed the foundation for the incredible expansion of aviation after the war."

Devoted readers to the blog are invited to read the remainder of the article for themselves.

Comments:

* Flying "The Hump" rated as more dangerous than flying four-engine strategic bomber missions over Germany.

* The American Air Force ARRS [Air Rescue Service or Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service] origins as a response to the difficulties of aircraft and personnel losses "The Hump".

* The famous American personality Gene Autry volunteering for military service and performing in a dutiful manner while flying "The Hump". Autry at the time of his enlistment the highest-paid performer among the Hollywood crowd.

* Pilots sometimes flying two-way cargo missions. Returning to home base in India with human cargo of Chinese troops as slated for training by American military personnel onboard. I believe these were Chinese Nationalist soldiers that later comprised X Force and Y Force.

And now you know the rest of the story "The Hump" and are the better for it too.

From that period of the Saddam insurgency in the aftermath of Gulf War Two:

https://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2007/11/the-latest-about-mosul-dam

Further and in historical context the Yellow River flood, 1938-47:

"In June 1938, Chinese Nationalist armies under the command of Chiang Kai-shek breached the Yellow River’s dikes at Huayuankou in Henan province in a desperate attempt to block a Japanese military advance . . . Perhaps the single most environmentally damaging act of warfare in world history . . . Between 1938 and 1947, this disaster killed more than 800,000 people in Henan, Anhui, and Jiangsu and displaced nearly four million."

And the culprit the Dneiper river flooding is? We might never know with any degree of certainty?

Little Chinese children at an early age taught to carry satchel charges, navigate an obstacle course, place the satchel charge on the target. That side-wise crawling method evidently popular among the Chinese and Japanese military of World War Two.
