Penal.

This is coolbert:

Still further the "Daily Mail" and their outstanding coverage of the  Ukraine Conflict.

"Morale collapses among Russia's troops: Putin's soldiers shot comrades who refused to open fire on civilians and so many are deserting they have been threatened with seven years in jail, POWs claim

* "A captured Russian soldier said he was shot at for helping civilians in Kharkiv" * "Another POW in a video claims Russian deserters are threatened with jail time" * "The men made their claims in videos released by the Ukrainian Security Service"

Back in the days of the old Soviet Union and the era of the Second World War such soldiers would have been placed into what were deemed by the Red Army as PENAL BATTALIONS.

Duty in a PENAL BATTALION reserved for soldiers not displaying the proper amount of courage on the battlefield or having committed some very minor or trivial mistake. Officers whose units failed to achieve an objective also often found in penal battalions, their rank reduced to that of a common private.

From the movie "Enemy at the Gate" and thanks to You Tube a frontal assault by poorly armed Soviet troops. Three assault companies of one-hundred twenty men each in a frenzied and futile frontal attack. The type of action every man doing servitude in a penal battalion would endure for the duration of the war. Survival over the long run about nil. Guard company to the rear manning machine guns a NKVD [secret police] unit. Bluecaps, often referred to as "blocking units". Prod you forward, recalcitrance unacceptable, those balking their fate very grim.

ACCORDING TO THE SOVIET DEFECTOR SUVOROV, OFFICERS SERVING IN THE GUARD COMPANY OF A PENAL BATTALION RECEIVING SEVEN TIMES NORMAL PAY. ADDITIONALLY GRANTED SEVEN YEARS OF SERVICE TOWARD RETIREMENT FOR EACH YEAR OF DUTY WITH A PENAL BATTALION!!

coolbert.
