"Martyrs of the Upshot Knothole [short story]" by James Morrow

Upshot Knothole a series of above-ground atomic tests occurring within a time frame close to when the movie "The Conqueror" filmed.

"A fictionalized account of a real event.  The martyrs of the Upshot Knothole are the actors and crew who participated in the filming of 'The Conqueror', a film about the life of Genghis Khan.   The area where the film was shot was contaminated with radioactivity, and a number of them came down with cancer.   In this film, the unnamed narrator, who played the Khan's mother (played by Agnes Moorehead in real life), and John Wayne undergo a form of psychic therapy to control their cancer."
