Donbass war the 2014 overt fighting ending in a stalemated trench warfare situation with exchange of weapons fire a very common occurrence.

Stalemated situation no longer tolerable to Moscow, the events beginning on 24 February 2022 just a much more escalated hostile situation, Vlad seeking his own final solution to the Donbass problem

See the wiki entry, the Donbass War: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Donbas

"The war in Donbas . . . is an armed conflict in the Donbas region of Ukraine, part of the broader Russo-Ukrainian War. In March 2014, immediately following the Euromaidan protest movement and subsequent Revolution of Dignity, protests by pro-Russian, anti-government separatist groups arose in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts of Ukraine, collectively called the Donbas. These demonstrations began around the same time as Russia's annexation of Crimea, and were part of wider pro-Russian protests across southern and eastern Ukraine. Declaring the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR, respectively), armed Russian-backed separatist groups seized government buildings throughout the Donbas, leading to armed conflict with Ukrainian government forces."

Understand that the bulk of blog entries year 2014 concerned the Islamic State [ISIL] and their march through Syria and Iraq. ISIL at the time seemed to be unbeatable and unstoppable, a regional concern with international ramifications very worrisome. Hardly however was Ukraine ignored. Under events Donbass 2014 and your perspective on the current conflict much better.
