Artillery-centric.

This is coolbert:

Herewith a Twitter thread from the Armchair Warlord.

"A thread to understand the War in Ukraine and the devastation of Russian artillery…"

* @ArmchairW

* "Okay team, tonight I'll be talking about how the Russian Battalion Tactical Group [BTG] is actually an artillery unit (and I'm only slightly kidding about that)."

* "Artillery isn't glamorous like tanks, but it's far and away the most dangerous thing on the modern battlefield."

A Russian battalion tactical group [using NATO standard symbols]. BTG consisting of from left to right one tank company, three mechanized infantry companies, an anti-tank company, three artillery batteries [3] and two air defense batteries. Artillery as I have seen images of as active in the Ukraine Conflict predominantly of the 152 mm self-propelled type. Artillery as often counted in the old Soviet system as any mortar of 120 mm or greater. Of those artillery batteries might also be found a mix of multiple-rocket launchers.

Indeed, Russian BTG very artillery-heavy. An artillery-centric approach to modern warfare easier to implement than combined arms maneuver warfare? The latter requiring a lot of training and professionalism.

A similarly sized NATO battalion task force sized unit might consist of three mechanized infantry companies, a tank company, an artillery battery [1] and various other combat arms and combat support units [i.e. engineers] as seen necessary for the mission assigned.

See entire Twitter thread for further discussion and elaboration.

And thank you Armchair Warlord.
