This is coolbert:
"crackpot: one given to eccentric or lunatic notions".
Almost literally so lunatic. Luna. Moon.
As seen at the Internet web site History and thanks to same the tip from Lorenzo.
"Why the Air Force Almost Blasted the Moon with an H-Bomb"
"Call it a Cold War show of force."
DETONATE AN ATOMIC WEAPON ON THE SURFACE of the moon CIRCA 1958.
"circa: at approximately, in approximately, or of approximately —used especially with dates"
"Detonating a thermonuclear weapon on the moon? It sounds like the bizarro scheme of a deranged comic-book villain—not a project initiated inside the U.S. government."
"But in 1958, as the Cold War space race was heating up, the U.S. Air Force launched just such an endeavor. Called Project A119, it harnessed the talents of some of America’s top scientists."
Properly seen as a demonstration of American military know-how and technological prowess. At a time when such "know-how" and "prowess" was being seriously questioned.
A DETONATION THAT COULD BE SEEN FROM THE EARTH WITH [?] THE UNAIDED EYE!
Hardly can be thought of as being anything less than impressive. The target audience the populations of the United States and those leaders of any nation as hostile to the USA. Even to scare.
But such a "demonstration" never occurred and probably all for the better. A119 kaput and we can be thankful.
coolbert.
