USS Miami.

This is coolbert:

Gone with the wind.

USS Miami RIP!

That USS Miami nuclear attack submarine heavily damaged as the result of arson NOW to be scrapped.

Funds available for repair [even beyond what already allocated for refurbishment] now lacking, the submarine now to be stricken from the registry and turned into scrap metal.

"Navy drops plans to repair fire-damaged USS Miami sub"

"PORTLAND, Maine –  The Navy has decided that it will not repair the nuclear-powered submarine USS Miami after concluding that the cost of repairing damage from a fire set by a civilian worker is more than it can afford due to mandated budget cuts."

"The decision to scrap the Groton, Conn.-based sub comes after a damage assessment by the Navy found that estimated repair costs, originally estimated to be about $450 million, have risen dramatically"

The sub while in dry dock originally for refurbishment, now needing in addition extensive and almost overwhelming repair. Beyond the costs of funding of which had already been allocated.

As had been the subject of a previous blog entry from less than a year ago, the USS Miami the object of an arson attack by a disgruntled worker that man responsible claiming an "anxiety attack".

One man, one match, and poof! Strange and hard to believe but true.

Mays USN.

This is coolbert:

Innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

USS Bonhomme Richard amphibious assault ship a wreck, to be scrapped. A $1 billion USD loss. All because of one disgruntled sailor?

Courtesy the British tabloid Daily Mail and thanks to same.

"Female sailor at center of USS Bonhomme fire report: Seaman who 'torched' Navy ship told investigators they were engaged until he dumped her for getting pregnant by another man - but she says it's all 'bipolar lies'"

"A female sailor who worked on the COVID Navy ship USNS Mercy dismissed the claims of the 'bipolar' seaman accused of torching the USS Bonhomme after he told friends they were engaged until he dumped her for getting pregnant by another man."

REVENGE FOR THE JILTED AMERICAN SAILOR, HIS GIRLFRIEND HAVING TAKEN UP WITH ANOTHER MAN. REVENGE OF A STRANGE AND ODD SORT!

"Seaman Apprentice Ryan Sawyer Mays, 20, has been charged with setting the fire on board the Bonhomme last July. His attorney says he had nothing to do with it and he is awaiting a preliminary hearing.:

"bipolar disorder: any of several psychological disorders of mood characterized usually by alternating episodes of depression and mania"

Think also the strange case of the USS Miami. Also set on fire and eventually scrapped. In that instance a disgruntled civilian worker to blame. That was "only" a half-billion dollar $ USD vessel.

Vandalism.

This is coolbert:

"Don't mess with Texas!"

Consider the never ending saga of submarines while docked and moored being damaged. More damage to submarines done while in port than while at sea!

Here with one more incident of bad. Thanks to "American Military News", the tip from Freeper.

"US Navy investigating vandalism of nuclear submarine". SSN-775.

 The story by Ryan Morgan ^ | 4/22/22 |.

"The U.S. Navy is investigating what they believe is an intentional act of vandalism that damaged equipment within the Virginian-class submarine USS Texas (SSN-775) in the last month. The suspected vandalism took place as the USS Texas has been undergoing maintenance at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine. Shipyard spokesperson Danna Eddy said in a statement reported by the Portsmouth Herald on Thursday that federal government equipment on the submarine was damaged on or around March 29 of this year."

Like I said, these occurrences while not common are not so terribly rare either. Not only vandalism but damage of a nature that can be attributed to just plain slip-shod procedures and failure to adhere to safety protocols.

See previous incidents damage to submarines with docked and moored, not sailing:

Fire!

This is coolbert:

Here with the tale of two submarines.

Within a period about six months, two submarines in dry dock, under-going repairs, restoration, enhancements, having caught fire, major damage occurring.

My thought is that the second incident [American] a copy cat arson?

First from Russia.

1. "Russia submarine fire 'totally extinguished'"

"MURMANSK, Russia | Fri Dec 30, 2011
(Reuters) - Russia said on Friday it had doused a raging blaze aboard a nuclear submarine after nearly a full day and night, by partially submerging the vessel after battling the flames with water from helicopters and tug boats."

"Official statements were vague, but the blaze is believed to have started when wooden scaffolding caught fire during welding repairs to the 167-meter (550 feet) Yekaterinburg submarine, which had been hoisted into a dry dock."

That fire on the Yekaterinburg only finally extinguished by partially submerging the vessel in water. Firefighters facing an almost impossible task the construction of a submarine rendering conventional fire-fighting methods and techniques near useless.

[that welders torch set the wooden structure of the dry dock on fire, heating the steel hull of the ship and setting fire to the underlayment I might assume!]

Second from the United States.

2. "Civilian worker set fire to submarine in Maine so he could leave early, Navy says"

"PORTLAND, Maine –  A civilian employee set a fire that caused $400 million in damage to a nuclear-powered submarine because he had anxiety and wanted to get out of work early"

"Casey James Fury, 24, of Portsmouth, N.H., faces up to life in prison if convicted of two counts of arson in the fire aboard the USS Miami attack submarine while it was in dry dock May 23 and a second blaze outside the sub on June 16".

Life in prison a possible and Mr. Fury has already entered a guilty plea. Restitution is impossible, the man needs to re-pay the government nearly half a BILLION dollars!! The taxpayers will be responsible for the restitution.

Mr. Fury evidently a person with some sort of mental problems and also taking medications but the pharmaceuticals not working to the extent needed, Mr. Fury acting in an aberrant most destructive manner.

Again, fighting these fires on submarine while the ship in dry dock a difficult and most arduous task.

Most surprisingly so, these various naval warships, in particular the submarine, more likely to damaged while in dry dock and under-going repairs, maintenance and refurbishment. Operations at sea less hazardous it seems to the health and well-being of the vessel!!

That American submarine USS Guitarro the most extreme example of a submarine while at dock, having been launched, but sinking even before making the maiden voyage!!

Next-Gen.

This is coolbert:

British warship even before launching construction halted. Internal sabotage.

"British Next-Gen Warship ‘Sabotaged’"

By RT | May 14th 2023. Russian controlled [?] media Russian Times.

"A probe was launched into suspected “intentional” damage aboard the frigate HMS Glasgow."

"British defense contractor BAE Systems is assessing the scope of repairs needed following an alleged act of sabotage on the Royal Navy’s newest frigate, which is still under construction."

"According to the UK Defense Journal, which first reported the incident, more than 60 cables were cut aboard the vessel. The publication said it is believed that 'an issue related to payment disputes' could have been the motive."

The disgruntled, disaffected, aggrieved worker with huge chip-on-shoulder to blame? A pay dispute for which an individual would risk the lives of others?

BAE now as reported to do a costly quality control check of previous assemblies and systems critical in all cases. Further internal sabotage suspected?

Think too of the sad end to the American nuclear submarine USS Miami. Sabotaged by a lazy worker the ship having caught fire, damage so great that vessel had to be scrapped. A $ half-billion warship done in by a single civilian worker with chip-on-shoulder grudge.

ORP ORZEL.

This is coolbert

The wings of the eagle have been clipped!

"ORP ORZEL ON FIRE". ORZEL = eagle.

From WIZARD through Harry at Sharkhunters:

"A fire broke out aboard the Polish Navy's only Kilo-class submarine, ORP ORZEL recently, as it was docked at the Polish navy shipyard in Gdynia for repairs. The incident was initially not reported by the defense ministry and was confirmed by Armed Forces General Command spokesman Cichy following an inquiry."

"According to Polish media, four sailors were aboard the submarine when the incident occurred on 27 September but no one was hurt. The extent of damage the fire caused is yet to be revealed."

"ORP ORZEL has spent the past three years docked for maintenance and repairs. It is now unclear whether the 31-year old submarine will return to service as the cost of repairs could turn out to be too high for the investment to pay off."

"This is not the first incident ORP ORZEL has been involved in since starting her repairs in February 2014. In 2016, the submarine was damaged while being undocked, prompting further delays in returning to sea."

As been noted in many previous blog entries, it seems the danger to a submarine is greater when the vessel is at dock and not sailing as compared to a boat at sea, submerged. This sounds obviously counter-intuitive but the record seems to suggest so.

I would have to think too that the cost of repairs for a thirty-one year old submarine, not counting the refit and refurbishment and time spent would be greater than BUYING A BRAND NEW BOAT!

Catastrophe & Disaster.

This is coolbert:

From that previous blog entry major warships while in port, docked and anchored, suffering catastrophic and disastrous spontaneous explosion NOT WHILE IN ACTION WITH AN ADVERSARY not such an uncommon event as we might expect.

Warships blown to bits, hors de combat with often enormous and near total loss of life. An ammunition powder magazine detonating for whatever reason, the result a horizontal blast within the ship of prodigious and epic magnitude, taking out all compartments from bow to stern.

Here with an index of those blog entries the topic of which was spontaneous and unexplained catastrophic explosions, taking the warship to the bottom with often near full complement, AND WHILE ANCHORED, IN SUPPOSED SAFE WATERS:.

Also with an index of submarine disasters quite recent in most cases. Fires, explosions and sinking of submarines again at dock, not sailing! MORE DANGER TO A SUBMARINE WHEN MOORED THAN WHEN ON PATROL:

Oscar II.

This is coolbert:

Thanks to Sputnik News we have yet one more instance of damage to a submarine while at dock. It seems greater danger to a submarine while in port and not sailing, not under the water!!

"Fire on Russian Nuclear Sub Caused by Safety Violations During Welding"

"The nuclear attack submarine caught fire as a result of safety violations during the welding works"

"Russian Nuclear Sub on Fire to Be Partially Submerged - Shipbuilders"

"MOSCOW, April 7 (Sputnik) — A fire on board a nuclear attack submarine at the Zvezdochka shipyard in northwestern Russia was caused by safety violations during the welding works, a spokesman for the shipyard said on Tuesday."

This is an Oscar II class submarine.

"'Today, as a result of violations of the technical process during the welding works, a fire was ignited in the lower part of the hull of the Orel submarine, which is undergoing planned overhaul'"

PARTIAL SUBMERGENCE OF THE SUBMARINE WHILE AT DOCK THE ONLY 100 % GUARANTEE OF TOTALLY EXTINGUISHING THE FIRE!!

Also this type of news report during the Cold War era would have been totally suppressed by Soviet authorities, a non news-reportable item. NOT NOW!
