Trans = Transgender.

"Transgender women, who were born male, are still required to sign up for the Selective Service in the event of a military draft." [you are required to register even if no military draft done or conscription of any sort enacted.]

"The policy, which has already been in effect for some time, gained new attention after the Selective Service System issued a reminder for men between the ages of 18 and 25 to register for the service."

This is sole surviving son stuff. Wrongly understood by the general public. Sole surviving son only as a result of combat action. An older brother or your father for instance killed in combat and you are the remaining male of the family line. Sole surviving son applies too only in peacetime and can be amended at any time by Congress.
