This is coolbert:
Herewith curiosities and novelties of Soviet era submarine design.
Thanks in all cases to the H.I. Sutton Internet web site "Covert Shores".
1. "Stalin's Super Sub - Project P-2"
"A monstrously large submarine by any standards, the 5,360 ton P-2
design was to be equipped with both Ballistic Missiles and Cruise
Missiles, as well as its own midget submarines."
Fire missiles, cruise and ballistic both, torpedoes fore and aft, launch midget submarines, had deck guns [one dual 57 mm mount and one dual 25 mm mount] and probably could deploy sea mines!
2. "Project 673 submarine Soviet sailless super-sub"
"Sail - - In naval parlance, the sail (American usage) or fin (European/Commonwealth usage) of a submarine is the tower-like structure found on the dorsal (topside) surface of submarines"
"The Project 673 submarine was designed as an interceptor boat, to be
kept in port and sent out in the event of an intruding NATO submarine.
It was therefore designed for speed."
"Many design concepts from the Project 673 were put into practice in the Project 705K ALFA Class which entered service in the 1970s."
DESIGN CONCEPTS INCLUDED IN THE ALFA CLASS SUB TO INCLUDE TITANIUM HULL, AUTOMATION, HIGH-SPEED NUCLEAR REACTOR!
3. "Piranha Special Forces submarine"
"The p.865 'Piranha' midget submarine was a dedicated Spetsnaz special operations craft capable of delivering 6 frogmen to a target over 400 miles from its base."
MANY IMAGES OF PIRANHA I HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. ONLY SEVERAL PIRANHA WERE EVER BUILT, TITANIUM HULLED AND USED STRICTLY FOR NAVAL COMMANDO OPERATIONS. RANGE HOWEVER LIMITED UNLESS CARRIED OR TOWED TO TARGET BY ANOTHER VESSEL IF POSSIBLE.

France 1940.
This is coolbert:
From the Internet web site "Small Wars Journal" and the article by David Campbell and Jesse McIntyre III the topic is the Battle of France 1940 those points of interest in the nutshell type of stuff the defeat of the French army.
"A Policy of Defeat"
"Time Magazine commented in August 1939 that French Army General Maurice Gamelin was head, by unanimous acclaim, of the world’s finest military machine."
Six major reasons given for French defeat include:
* 1) "Deficiencies in morale, caused by widespread defeatism."
* 2) "Faulty French military doctrine and policy"
* 3) "Inadequate training of reserves in peacetime"
* 4) "The detrimental effects of the Maginot Line"
* 5) "Incompetent aged leadership"
* 6) "Irreconcilable political divisions within France’s Third Republic"
* "A seventh additional reason is security agreements that committed France to countries that lacked reciprocity."
My personal comments:
* Gamelin apparently more incompetent than anything else. NOT however a traitor as has been suggested by some.
* The French COULD HAVE won the Battle of France 1940 but according to Dupuy placed TOO LITTLE faith in the Maginot Line. Four armies deployed vicinity the line in a strictly defensive posture when ONLY ONE would have sufficed!!
* NOT so much the French were bad as the German were good? That blitzkrieg consisting of concentrated armor and tactical aviation working in concert WITH strong and effective anti-aircraft-artillery [AAA] useful in consolidating and protecting gains!
Devoted readers to the blog can suggest additional reasons? Let me hear from you.

Arrest!
This is coolbert:
If and when this proceeds none of it bodes well:
"Hate Speech Erdoğanist Turkish lawyers seek arrest of US officers at Turkey’s İncirlik Airbase"
"A group of pro-Erdoğan Turkish lawyers has applied to the Adana Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office for the arrest of members of the US military at İncirlik Airbase in Adana for their alleged cooperation with the Gülen movement"
AND WHAT EXACTLY WILL OCCUR IF AN WHEN TURKISH POLICE OR MILITARY EITHER MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO ARREST THE AMERICAN OFFICERS OR EVEN ACTUALLY TAKE U.S. PERSONAL INTO CUSTODY?
INCIRLIK ALSO A STORAGE AREA FOR AMERICAN ATOMIC WEAPONRY WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF NATO MISSION AND CONTINGENCY! THOSE WEAPONS HAVE BEEN MOVED? COMPROMISE TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES AND DIRE CONSEQUENCES AS A RESULT OF ANY TURKISH UNILATERAL ACTON IN THIS REGARD!!
See previous blog entries with further links the topic of which was Incirlik AFB and the atomic arsenal as stored at same:

Bab.
This is coolbert:
Bab as in Bab al-Mandeb! Yet again that narrow water-way a critical choke point an important factor in world geopolitical machinations of the highest order.
From the latest edition of the DEBKAfile news letter type of coverage you will find no where else.
1. "Iran's Saviz 'cargo' ship orchestrated Red Sea attack on two Saudi oil tankers"
28 July.
"The attack on two Saudi supertankers on the Red Sea on Wednesday, July 25, was orchestrated by the Iranian Saviz, a weapons-carrying spy ship . . . It is packed with advanced surveillance gear for tracking shipping on the Red Sea. Before the attack, signals from the Saviz were intercepted informing the Houthis' shore base when the tanker would be passing within missile range."
"Although the damage minimal, the Saudis decided not to take any chances and announced the suspension of oil shipping through the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb until conditions were secure. Oil prices shot up by one percent on the world markets."
2. "Netanyahu: If Iran tries to block Bab al-Mandeb, it will face a coalition with Israel in full military array"
1 August.
"Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Wednesday, Aug. 1, issued a warning in a speech to graduates of the Navy's Captains' course in Haifa: 'Early this week we saw an Iranian proxy [Houthi] trying to interfere with shipping sailing through the Straits of Bab al-Mandeb. I am convinced that an international coalition resolved to prevent this happening awaits Iran. And this coalition will include the State of Israel with all its full military array.' He [Benjamin] was talking about a lineup of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Israel, following the Yemeni Houthi missile attack on two Saudi super tankers in the Red Sea."
YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WARNED!
"And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet." - - Matthew 24:6.

GBSD I.
This is coolbert:
GBSD = Ground Based Strategic Deterrent.
First from the Russian media outlet RT. Think also cost-effective?
1. "US Air Force destroys ICBM after ‘anomaly’ during test launch"
"A Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile [ICBM] test ended in failure when the projectile was ordered to self-destruct due to an 'anomaly' that developed during the flight, the US Air Force has confirmed."
A NORMAL AND PERIODIC TEST OF MINUTEMAN III ICBM GOES AWRY. MISSILE DESTRUCTS WHEN LAUNCHED AND AIRBORNE. THIS IS UNCOMMON BUT DOES OCCUR FROM TIME TO TIME.
Second thanks to the tip from RT that successor to Minuteman III in the works? GBSD?
2. "New ICBM Cheaper Than Upgraded Minuteman: Boeing On GBSD"
That article from Breaking Defense by Sydney J. Freedberg Jr.
"ARLINGTON: A brand-new ICBM may cost the nation more than $85 billion, but keeping the geriatric Minuteman will cost even more. That’s according to Boeing, the aerospace giant that began building the original Minuteman I in 1958 and has maintained the much-modified Minuteman III since 1970."
Minuteman III that part of the Nuclear Triad as it is called. Ground-based nuclear deterrent persuasive. A missile and system quite ancient [original program began in 1966!] now. A replacement is in the works?
EASIER AND CHEAPER TO BUILD AND PLACE INTO THE INVENTORY A NEW ICBM THAN ENDLESSLY MAINTAIN AND UPGRADE MINUTEMAN III? THIS IS THE QUESTION?

Poseidon.
This is coolbert:
From the H.I. Sutton Internet web site "Covert Shores" some details of the Russian nuclear-powered torpedo NATO code name Kanyon.
Thanks to the tip and original article as seen at the Russian media outlet RT.
Details of the latest and greatest Russian "Doomsday" weapon some specifications, parameters, capabilities, and discussion of possible American counter-measures.
"Russian 'Poseidon' Intercontinental Nuclear-Powered Nuclear-Armed Autonomous Torpedo'Poseidon' / 'Status-6' / 'Skif' seabed launched variant / NATO: KANYON"
"The Poseidon is the largest torpedo ever developed in any country. At around 2 meters (6.5 ft) in diameter and over 20 meters (65 ft) long, it is approximately twice the size of submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) and thirty times the size of a regular ‘heavyweight’ torpedo."
ATOMIC WARHEAD OF KANYON REPUTED TO BE MERELY TWO MEGATONS RATHER THAN ONE-HUNDRED MEGATONS AS ORIGINALLY THOUGHT. A BIG BANG NONETHELESS!
Kanyon apparently hardly an on-the-drawing-board novelty but now accepted as a valid and dangerous weapon system! I also recommend the Internet web site "Covert Shores" highly without qualification or reservation. Outstanding.

See this Russian language video courtesy You Tube. Kanyon carried to the target by a dedicated submarine and launched, autonomous from that point forward. Kanyon also can be deployed in the manner of a sea-mine?

Bombastic.
This is coolbert:
It had been hoped ever since the dissolution of the old Soviet Union such war-like language and boasting of military weaponry and prowess was a thing of the past. NO!
"Russia’s Doomsday Way of Diplomacy and War"
From the Dr. Rich Swier Internet web site the original article by Dr. Peter Pry.
"Vladimir Putin’s March 1, 2018, televised warning that Russia is developing new nuclear super-weapons — including POSEIDON, a doomsday machine with a 100-megaton TSAR warhead — may signify the world is closer to the nuclear brink than most in Washington think."
"Moscow has an affinity for doomsday weapons — and for revealing their existence in a crisis."
During that time of the Cold War [Soviet Union] the super-weapons or systems associated with the super-weapons to include: [not necessarily limited to]
* Tsar Bomba. The super-bomb. One-hundred megatons [100 MT]
* Dead Hand. Soviet/Russian Doomsday system.
* VRYAN. Soviet/Russian C3I nuclear-arsenal computer.
Those modern [Russian] super-weapons to include: [but I might think not necessarily limited to]
* Hypersonic air-launched missile. [Unstoppable/maneuverable]. Air-launched Stone SSM?]
[Might also be a Zircon anti-ship hypersonic missile?]
* Nuclear-powered torpedo with nuclear warhead [100 MT?]. [Poseidon]
* Nuclear powered cruise missile. [unlimited range/endurance]
* Satan-2 ICBM. [Two missiles can destroy all of Texas]
* Avangard hypersonic-maneuverable intercontinental atomic warhead delivery system.

Watch this You Tube video of the Avengard in action as might be the case if and when a nuclear exchange occurs between the United States and Russia. Avengard able to elude all known detection and anti-ballistic missile defense systems.
