As of this exact moment no mention in the news media of an American submarine have been torpedoed by the Russians and sunk.

The fire with loss of life on the Russian AS-12 Losharik submarine is reported.

Nothing further with regard to additional possible submarine disaster.

Also in certain media reports that President Putin was meeting in emergency meeting with his defense chiefs. AND Vice-President Pence canceling a scheduled trip and also returning to Washington DC in a hurried manner.

LOSHARIK DESCRIBED AS A "SPY SHIP". NOT "SPY" IN THE TRADITIONAL SENSE OF THE WORD. RECONNAISSANCE AND SPECIAL OPERATIONS OF A MILITARY NATURE RATHER.

Losharik as envisioned not operating in a fully 100 % autonomous and independent manner. Slung underneath a modified Soviet era Delta III class missile firing submarine. Carried to the "scene of the action" by the "mother-ship" and released. Recovered when mission completed. Losharik not going it alone.

2. Losharik a "spy ship" apparently with a primary on-call mission the interdiction of undersea Internet fiber optic cable. Intercept and "listen in" to Internet communications and traffic during a time of peace. Sever such cables during a time of war or possible conflict.

Naval strategy for over one-hundred years the protection of oceanic choke points as deemed essential to world commerce and war-making capability of nations heavily dependent on trade and commerce, transport of raw materials via merchant marine vessels essential to vital industries.

That story of the AS-12 Russian Losharik reconnaissance and underwater research submarine in trouble. As reported AS-12 with casualties. No mention of an American nuclear submarine.

"(CNN) A fire aboard a Russian deep water submersible killed 14 Russian crew members, state news agencies reported Tuesday, citing the Ministry of Defense [Russian MoD]."

"The submariners died from smoke inhalation after a blaze broke out on the craft, which was carrying out research in Russian territorial waters, according to the state-run news agency Tass."

ACCORDING TO THE OUTSTANDING H.I. SUTTON INTERNET WEB SITE LOSHARIK CARRIED TO THE SCENE OF INTEREST BY A MUCH LARGER "MOTHER SHIP".

This news item no mention of Alaskan waters. Northern Fleet of the Russian navy operates in the Barents Sea, vicinity Norway. Please notice the article stresses Losharik suffering damage and taking casualties while operating in Russian territorial waters.

AMERICAN SUBMARINE SUNK BY THE RUSSIANS??

"Urgent consultations in Washington, Moscow on reported US-Russian submarines in firefight"

"First reports reaching DEBKAfile’s military sources say that a US submarine intercepted a Russian nuclear sub [AS-12] in American waters opposite Alaska. The Russian sub escorting the nuclear submarine responded with a Balkan 2000 torpedo and scuttled [sank] the US vessel. Urgent consultations in both the White House and the Kremlin were taking place on Tuesday night. US Vice President Mike Pence called off an appearance in  New Hampshire after being recalled to Washington for a conference called by President Donald Trump without explanation."

Russian submarine [AS-12] in Alaskan waters reported to be a reconnaissance and deep-diving vessel used for research purposes. Russians aboard the AS-12 also reportedly killed and many others injured. AS-12 also called Losharik and can be carried to an oceanic site of interest by a much larger attack submarine with combat capability.

As to the credibility of DEBKAfile and their reporting the famous blogger Spengler considers DEBKA to be unworthy and unreliable under the best of circumstances.

Indeed, if an American submarine has been sunk by the Russians they will not be able to easily explain this away and it will be shortly become common knowledge the vessel is gone, perhaps with total loss of crew.

Destruct.

From a question as asked by myself in a previous blog entry:

Syrian SA-5 missile having missed the target continuing on course, hitting a hillside in Cyprus.

And the answer to the question is YES!

As per conversation with an acknowledged aviation authority:

"They are supposed to have both a command-initiated destruct mechanism as well as an auto destruct that self initiates when they fly a certain distance or time without hitting a target. Very unusual; probably a malfunction. The self and auto destruct mechanisms not only  [1] prevent the missile from hitting one’s own civilians . . .  but also to [2] prevent the technology from falling intact into enemy hands."

There you have it. In the nutshell. That this missile after missing the intended target either did not "command-initiated" or "auto destruct" apparently a violation of procedures and protocols.

A major malfunction. Both destructs failed! Hard to think so.

Apparently Israeli warplanes over Lebanese air space the target. This was a Russian S-200 SA-5 missile? Missed the target and just kept going and going.
