ONLY SIXTEEN OF THOSE "BLACKJACK" WERE EVER MADE? And of that number, only maybe a dozen are capable of being flown on a mission? These would be standoff delivery systems! Launching cruise missiles from a distance at targets!
And, as for:
"‘fly one of those things’"! Meaning Hugo Chavez wants to take over the controls of a Tu-160 while in-flight! Whoa boy!! For experts only.
However, we cannot overstate the danger of Venezuela going further into the anti-American hate the gringo camp! Venezuela contributes a very significant portion of imported oil coming into the U.S. [Venezuelan oil for the most part can ONLY be refined at U.S. refineries? Chemical content of Venezuela oil is such that refineries in the U.S. ONLY can process the crude.] Venezuela too has enormous and untapped reservoirs of tar sands!!
CHAVEZ SEES VENEZUELA AS BEING A MAJOR PLAYER ON THE WORLD STAGE! And the scene for the U.S. is NOT favorable!

Commentary - Russia

"You are surprised Russia is pushing back . . . Maybe it's in the Russkies character to play hard guy when they can. Still, we have been baiting them for quite a while now and they react."
I first must say that I am mildly surprised by the current resurgence of Russia. For a period of almost two decades, the once "super-power" [at least in the form of the old Soviet Union] has been moribund. Seemingly down and out for the count, with a variety of difficulties, to include an unfavorable demographic problem [a smaller percentage of the population that is of Slavic origin/a sickly population unfit for military service] for which there is no reasonable resolution.
I also think the question should be asked - - is this new found assertiveness part of an overall plan - - long-term in nature - - or is it merely a reaction to behavior on the part of "west" that the Russians find to be intolerable?
Long-range aviation [Tu-95] "reconnaissance" flights. Development of hypersonic re-entry vehicles. Forceful incursion into Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Thinly veiled threats against Poland. Advanced weapons development and sales of same to Iran and India [BrahMos]. Staking claim on a goodly part of the Arctic Ocean. Denial of the Katyn Massacre, six thousand [6,000] ex-KGB in positions of power, Etc.
The list could go on and on! Machinations already occurring - - more to follow!
From the time of Ivan the Terrible until the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia was an expansionist Imperial power. The current rulers in the Kremlin again see themselves as inheritors of Czarist tradition? NOT ONLY maintaining the status quo, but acting on the world stage as SPOILERS!! Desirous to once again be a world power to be reckoned with?
Reaction on the part of the Russian to transpiring events - - OR - - part of a master plan - - orchestrated from the Kremlin - - OR a combination of both!!??
NOT surprisingly, defectors from the old communist eastern bloc tend to be very pessimistic in their appreciations of the Russians, warning of potentially dire consequences if this new found aggressiveness is not properly understood or countered!
Various secret services and "experts" are now trying to determine the intentions of the "Bear".

Minden

Here with surprising stuff, thanks to the wiki entry on the Battle of Minden:
"Minden in regimental tradition"
The British regiments which fought at Minden, namely:
* 12th of Foot, 20th Foot, 23rd of Foot, 25th of Foot, 37th of Foot, 51st Foot .
The descendents of these [regiments] are still known as "the Minden Regiments".
"When the British Infantry were first advancing to battle they passed through some German gardens and the soldiers plucked roses and stuck them in their coats. In memory of this, each of the Minden regiments marks the 1 August as Minden Day. On that day the men of all ranks wear roses in their caps. The Light Infantry wear Yorkshire white roses."

There is too, a much greater significance to the events of 1 August, 1759.
A significance directly related to the American Revolutionary War [sometimes called the American War of Independence!]. The American colonial "insurrectionists" would not have triumphed in their war against Great Britain if the events at Minden had NOT transpired as they did?
1. The dereliction of duty and insubordination on the battlefield of Sir George Sackville, latter known to the world in another incarnation as George Germaine!
"Ferdinand's [the German commander of the multi-national force opposing the French] cavalry commander, Sir George Sackville, was accused of ignoring repeated orders . . . he requested a court martial, but the evidence against him [Sackville] was substantial and the court martial declared him '...unfit to serve His Majesty in any capacity whatsoever.' Sackville would later reappear as Lord George Germain and bear a major portion of the blame for the American Revolution."
"The court found him guilty, and imposed one of the strangest and strongest verdicts ever rendered against a general officer. The court's verdict not only upheld his discharge, but ruled that he was "...unfit to serve his Majesty in any military capacity whatsoever", then ordered that their verdict be read to and entered in the orderly book of every regiment in the Army. The king had his name struck from the Privy Council rolls."
Sir George, because of his craven behavior at Minden was cashiered from the British Army and removed from any further military position, "whatsoever"!!!
BUT, NOT totally removed from governmental service. Was the Secretary of State for British colonial North America during the American Revolutionary War and is in large measure responsible for British defeat!!
"George Germain, 1st Viscount Sackville . . . who was Secretary of State for America in Lord North's cabinet during the American Revolution. His ministry received much of the blame for Britain's loss of her American colonies. This is not - - "The Peter Principle"? Sackville was an incompetent who rose above his station where he had demonstrated an inadequacy, and further again - - at a higher station of responsibility, continued to demonstrate incompetence. What is this called?

Lafayette - - became - - at age two, a fatherless child! And a man that was taught a detestation of the English. A man who desired to avenge the death of his father, and saw an opportunity to do so during the American Revolutionary War!
Much has been made of the father-son relationship between Washington and Lafayette. Washington saw Lafayette as the son he never had? Lafayette saw Washington as the father he never had? Psychologists spend endless hours mulling over this type of "thing"!
Lafayette WAS a significant figure of the American Revolutionary War! History does NOT overstate the importance of this man!? A situation that became favorable for the colonists would have not transpired as it did if not for the Marquis?

"Each year six red roses are delivered to the British Consulate General in Chicago on Aug. 1 to honor the Battle of Minden, which took place in Germany in 1759, when the Prussian-Hanoverian-British army defeated the French army. The roses have been coming every year now since 1967, with the exception of 2001 and 2002. Our Minden Roses were delivered Friday morning. The card accompanying the roses was in an unmarked envelope. The note read: 'They advanced through rose gardens to the battleground and decorated their tricorne hats and grenadier caps with the emblem of England . . .' The donor is a mystery to us . . . We should like to thank our anonymous donor. Is there any chance that we might thank this donor in person for paying honor every year to the men who fell on Aug. 1, 1759?"
This donor - - an anonymous person who has a very long history of memorializing the Battle of Minden centuries later - - and in a novel way - - is a someone best described as a romantic?
"Romantic - - not sensible about practical matters; idealistic and unrealistic - - "a wild-eyed dream of a world state" - - imbued with or dominated by idealism, a desire for adventure, chivalry, etc."

This is a response to the recent discovery - - of a large oil field, in pelagic water [deep waters] off the coast of Brazil. The Tupi field.

"The Tupi field lies under 2,140 meters (7,060 feet) of water . . . 286 kilometers (177 miles) south of Rio de Janeiro."
Brazil is now an oil-exporting nation! And will be more so in the future. This discovery is of significance!
Brazil does desire to protect this oil field, and will do so with naval assets.
But it is unreasonable to think that a nuclear "boomer" attack submarine is the answer. Nuclear attack submarines as fielded by the U.S. and Russia are designed for OFFENSIVE action far from home, in deep waters, fast moving subs with long range, capable of deep-diving operations. Carrying nuclear weapons, again, for offensive action, NOT for patrol and defense!
More reasonable to use one of the latest air-independent-propulsion [AIP] submarines that have recently become so popular. Submarines of the Gotland class, for instance. Submarines the basic mission would be for patrol and DEFENSIVE action, if and when needed.
The development of a nuclear powered submarine is going to take some time. And will be expensive in a variety of ways. A number of them will be needed for a protection and patrol mission to be effective. One nuke "boomer" will just not suffice.
Those nukes require a lot of maintenance, the processing and storage of fuel rods for the reactor core being a big headache. Better to go with a NUMBER of AIP subs, all equipped with the latest version torpedoes and cruise missiles, and you are ready! More subs added to the inventory quicker and cheaper with a lot less cost in the long run.
President Da Silva [Lula] and the Brazilian military also have intentions directed toward Antarctic waters as well? Brazil, surprisingly, does have claims upon the southernmost continent, as strange and absurd as that may seem to some.
For Brazil - - submarine yes - - NUKE NO!!

Did not shirk dangerous duty but rather embraced it!!
