"Ukraine: The Latest - Why Russian tanks are falling short of their Western counterparts"
"Every weekday The Telegraph's top journalists analyze the Russian invasion of Ukraine from all angles and tell you what you need to know"
From the archive of the English "Telegraph" | the story by David Knowles | 1 September 2023 •
"Telegraph Contributor Hamish de Bretton-Gordon OBE explains the difference between Russian and Western tanks."
"The three main attributes of the tank are * firepower * protection and * mobility."
"The Russians very much focus on firepower and mobility whereas Western tanks favor protection, that is physical protection of the crew"
That biggest deficiency of the Russian tank that the ammunition stored in the turret. A direct hit on the turret can result in a catastrophic detonation flinging the turret many meters from the hull of the tank itself. Certain death for the entire tank crew.
It is not so much the gun but the man behind the gun. Especially a trained tank crew very familiar with the tank and one another. Work as a team, have trained as a team, are a team. Hard to replace such personnel. A single tank crew also operating as part of a much larger unit hopefully and at the least trained as a unit, confident in their abilities. A synergy the value of the total greater than the sum of the individual parts!!
