NOT TO PRECLUDE THE POSSIBILITY THAT IRANIAN AIR DEFENSE [AD] SHOT THE PLANE DOWN BY ACCIDENT. AS PREPOSTEROUS AS SUCH AN ALLEGATION MAY SEEM.

To place such a possible even in context consider that during that period of the Cold War, it is alleged.The Soviet Union AD shot down FORTY of their own aircraft, so skittish and trigger happy were the defenders of Soviet air space.
