Sobering.

This is coolbert:

Combat aviation training very dangerous in all circumstances. Accidents, crashed warplanes and deaths from such accidents more common that generally perceived. Aircrew casualties and death while in training alone during the Second World War stupendous.

Thanks to the Internet web site "Real Clear History" and the article by Robert Blanchard

"Sobering Stats: 15,000 U.S. Airmen Killed in Training in WW II"

Strictly with regards to American combat aviation during the Second World War [WW2] consider:

"Looking at totals for the entire war is even more sobering. The U.S. suffered 52,173 aircrew combat losses. But another 25,844 died in accidents. More than half of these died in the continental U.S. The U.S. lost 65,164 planes during the war, but only 22,948 in combat. There were 21,583 lost due to accidents in the U.S., and another 20,633 lost in accidents overseas." [personally these statistics to me not so entirely clear. A devoted reader to the blog can bring clarify to the situation?]

Consider also:

* American bomber missions over Germany only one man in five would survive the requisite twenty-five missions.

* Flying the Hump [Himalaya mountains] more dangerous than flying a bomber mission over Germany.

* Bomber pilots such George McGovern [thirty-five missions] and Smokey Yunick [fifty missions] having accomplished the near impossible!

* That most common reason for pilot trainee "wash-out" the inability to copy Morse code at the most simple and rudimentary level of proficiency [five words per minute].

Who ever said any of this was going to be easy??

coolbert.

Crusty II.

This is coolbert:

Crusty conclusion!

First a comparison the cockpit a Tu-22M3 and the cockpit of a Tu-134.

Tu-22M3 cockpit.

Cockpit of a Tu-134 commercial plane. Similarities but not identical. Pilot a Tu-134 and you can pilot a Tu-22M3? Drive a Dodge sedan and you can drive a Porsche? Is that what this is? Modification to the forward compartment of the Tu-134 [cockpit and nose] allow for four teams of three men each to train on the plane during one flight? I am assuming a pilot, a co-pilot and a navigator per team.

About two dozen Tu-22 Backfire to be refurbished/retrofitted and deployed as part of the Russian Strategic Air Force arsenal. Pilots indeed needing a lot of training to fly Backfire with proficiency. See this RT video a Backfire sadly splitting in two during a landing in bad weather.

Devoted readers to the blog please also be aware that I have tried to insert images in a tandem manner, juxtaposed for comparison sake, but was unhappy with the results.

Crusty I.

This is coolbert:

Crusty = NATO code name for the Tu-134 commercial aircraft. Tu-22M3 = Russian combat warplane NATO code name Backfire.

Thanks to the Russian controlled [?] media Russian Times:

"‘Black Pearl’ of Russian air power returns to the sky (VIDEO)"

"The unique Tu-134UBL plane, also known as the ‘Black Pearl,’ has returned to the air after undergoing repairs, with the comeback flight caught in spectacular footage."

"It was developed on the basis of the Tu-134 passenger jet in early 1990s to train pilots and navigators from Tu-160 and Tu-22M3 strategic nuclear-capable bombers. Around 90 such aircraft were produced between 1981 and 1984."

Tu-22M3.Which came first? The chicken or the egg? Tu-134 became Tu-22 or the Tu-22 became the Tu-134? Or was it simultaneous and independent development?

Commercial version Tu-134UBL modified to serve as a training aircraft for those that man the Tu-22M3. Called the Black Pearl. Not quite the same plane in a manner of aspects. Tail different. Engines to the rear without the air inlets far forward. Cockpit and handling characteristics however more or less similar to the Tu-22M3 combat warplane!

Backfire having been taken out of mothballs and resurrected to combat status. Aircrews four at time can train [single aircrew consisting of a pilot, co-pilot and navigator] using the Black Pearl! A significant cost savings measure and also an indication that the Russians are serious about bolstering their strategic air capability.

Intercept.

This is coolbert:

Honestly, reading this I think some reporting is being done wrong here.

The usual method is to fire the ICBM from Vandenberg toward the Pacific, away from the American mainland.

Interceptors as fired from Kwajelein attempt to destroy the ICBM.

During this test it was the other way around? ICBM fired from Kwajelein toward the continental USA? Interceptors fired from Vandenberg?

Thanks to Freeper:

"US Military Shoots ICBM Target Out of the Sky in Missile Defense Test"

"Missiles shot from California's Vandenberg Air Force Base successfully destroyed an airborne target Monday (March 25) as part of a U.S. missile defense test... The target was an intercontinental ballistic missile launched from the Reagan Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, about 4,000 miles (6,440 kilometers) from Vandenberg. During the test, sensors in space, on the ground and at sea helped guide two ground-based interceptors (GBI) fired from Vandenberg. The first interceptor destroyed the target, a re-entry vehicle, while the second one searched the remaining debris for other threatening objects."

TEST IS DEEMED A SUCCESS!

WHAT EXACTLY WOULD OCCUR IF THE INTERCEPTORS DID NOT FLY STRAIGHT-AND-TRUE? SPACE JUNK OF A LETHAL VARIETY DESCENDING ON A MAJOR AMERICAN WEST COAST CITY WITH ALL THAT COULD MEAN?

"THREATENING OBJECTS" AS DEFINED PRESUMABLY TO BE INTERCEPTED BY THE SECOND MISSILE SO DANGER TO ANY POPULATED AREA OF WEST COAST USA MITIGATED? THIS WAS THE HOPE?

ARNG.

This is coolbert:

ARNG =  Army National Guard [USA].

From the Internet web site Small Wars Journal and thanks to same:

"National Guard Changes Logo Due to Failure of American Education System"

"On March 25th [2019], the National Guard Bureau officially announced new branding for recruiting. The traditional 'Minuteman' logo will no longer appear on recruiting materials. It was reported that the image did not 'resonate' with 16-18-year-old high school students because of lack of knowledge of the historic symbol. Concerns were also expressed that iconic figure from American history wasn’t 'inclusive.' Furthermore, due to 'no tolerance' policies concerning the display of images of firearms in schools, the traditional Minuteman logo could not be displayed due to inclusion of an 18th century flintlock rifle. Now the National Guard will be represented by a lackluster shield shaped black logo with white and gold lettering. The new recruiting videos will focus primarily on the National Guard’s domestic mission of natural disaster relief."

Branding! Knowledge! Image! Domestic!

The kinder and gentler fighting force. The Minuteman of 1776 the history of which not understood even in the most foggiest manner by the modern secondary-education American student?

coolbert.

India-Pakistan.

This is coolbert:

Here with extracts from an article as seen at the Internet web site Strategy Page. Title of blog entry in large measure as shamelessly copied.

"India-Pakistan: Weapons Of Mass Distraction"

1. Regarding the first-use of atomic munitions "low-threshold" of the Pakistani military during a time of war with India.

"Pakistan now insists it would only use its nukes if there were a major non-nuclear Indian attack/invasion of Pakistan. At the same time, the Pakistani military (which currently controls many senior elected officials) insists any such conventional attack would fail."

See the previous blog entry that "low-threshold" as defined!

2. Erasing India

"India has not been forgotten by the Chinese. Recently Chinese customs officials discovered a shipment of 30,000 world maps being exported by a Chinese printer to a foreign customer. The maps were seized and destroyed when it was discovered that the maps showed the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as part of India. China demands that all maps used or produced in China show Arunachal Pradesh as 'Southern Tibet' and part of China. Same with Taiwan, which is also considered another prodigal province".

Plywood.

This is coolbert:

Nothing like this since the time of the Second World War. A modern wooden warplane. A glider more correctly.

Thanks to Popular Mechanics, the tip from Freeper and the article by Kyle Mizokami

"The Marines’ Plywood Supply Drone Is Undergoing Flight Tests"

"The low-cost drone can deliver supplies to ground forces with pinpoint accuracy."

"LG-1K, developed by Logistic Gliders Inc under contract with DARPA and the U.S. Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory, is meant to be a very low-cost drone capable of being released from fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter. The plywood and aluminum drone is 10.4 feet long with a 23=foot wingspan. The LG-1K can carry up to 700 lb.s of supplies."

You can get some sense of scale of the drone glider from the You Tube video. LG-1K disposable. Can be controlled from the ground or autonomously lands via GPS system.

Think from the era of WW2 the Horsa glider and the Mosquito two-engine multi-purpose warplane. Made predominantly of wood and quite successful in both cases.

Devoted readers to the blog will know of other modern instances of modern wooden warplanes. Off the top of my head I can think of none.

Breaker.

This is coolbert:

From the era of the Cold War I was vaguely aware of all this. DARPA in action.

As described in the article as seen at Russian Times [RT]:

"Pentagon relaunches Cold War-era Assault Breaker program to fend off Russia and China – report"

"The Pentagon has dusted off a Cold war era concept to deal with large attacking forces, revamping it to fight Russia and China. While all the technologies are in place, the new-look program will come to fruition only in 10 years."

"In 1977, DARPA began the Assault Breaker program to develop a system to detect and destroy concentrations of mobile tank forces behind the front line."

Assault Breaker to an extent fielded and combat tested as part of the Army Tactical Missile System (ATacMS) project. ATACMS now kaput but will be brought out of mothballs?

FDU.

This is coolbert:

FDU = Falcon Destruction Unit.

War can be good for the birds. And war can be bad for the birds!

"MI5's unit with a daily licence to kill: WW2 squad shot down 'Nazi' falcons who were eating our carrier pigeons"

LICENSE TO KILL BUT NOT JAMES BOND!

"At the height of the Second World War, a crack MI5 unit was given the task of taking down the enemy in the skies over Britain."

"The hawks were picking off homing pigeons returning from Europe with vital information. Some pigeon owners even feared they were German-trained and working for the Nazis. So the Falcon Destruction Unit [FDU] was born."

HOMING PIGEONS AS SUPPLIED TO THE ANTI-NAZI RESISTANCE IN EUROPE CARRYING MESSAGES OF INTELLIGENCE VALUE HAVING TO TWICE RUN A GAUNTLET OF RAPTORS. GERMAN AND ENGLISH BOTH.

"The five-strong armed team covered the south coast, led by a retired Irish colonel and champion shot. They would scour the clifftops for nests, and abseil to set spring traps. Birds not caught in traps were shot."

Ushakov.

This is coolbert:

Never heard of this man before.

Think not Nelson of Copenhagen. Think not Nelson of the Nile. Think not Nelson of Trafalgar.

Think rather Ushakov the Russian. Naval commander the combat record of which exceeded Nelson?

Indeed, a case could be made that this Ushakov is the most brilliant and accomplished military commander of all time?

From the Internet web site Russian Insider and thanks to same:

"40 Naval Battles - He Won Them All - The Brilliant Russian Admiral Ushakov"

"He fought 40 battles without defeat and put the British Lord Nelson to shame."

"Fyodor Fyodorovich Ushakov . . . was the most illustrious Russian naval commander and admiral of the 18th century."

Further from the wiki:

"Distinguishing features of Ushakov's tactics were: use of *  unified marching and fighting orders; * resolute closing to close quarters with the enemy forces without evolution of a fighting order; * concentration of effort against enemy flagships; * maintaining a reserve (Kaiser-flag squadrons); * combination of aimed artillery fire and maneuvering; and * chasing the enemy to its total destruction or capture. Giving great value to sea and fire training of his staff, Ushakov was a supporter of generalissimo Suvorov's principles of training for sailors and officers. Ushakov's innovations were among the first successful developments of naval tactics, from its 'line' to maneuvering concepts."

THOSE COMMANDERS RECOGNIZED AS GREAT CAPTAINS NORMALLY MILITARY LEADERS ONLY OF LAND FORCES. NAVAL COMMANDERS GIVEN SHORT SHRIFT.

Alexander the Great and Horatio Nelson those two military commanders only normally as historically recognized as having been undefeated during their careers.

Ushakov also in a league with an Alexander or a Nelson and perhaps even beyond? Ushakov however his accomplishments unheralded and unrecognized. Until now?

3G2 Atomic.

This is coolbert:

You know this headline would stimulate my curiosity instantly.

The street-gang Brazilian style [3G2] gone nuclear? GWOT? WMD?

Thanks to the story from the Russian controlled [?] media Russian Times:

"Armed gang raids convoy carrying uranium fuel to Brazil nuclear plant"

"A truck carrying nuclear fuel to one of Brazil's power plants has come under attack by a group of armed men who engaged in a shootout with police officers guarding the convoy."

"The uranium shipment came under attack on Tuesday in the town of Frade, about 30 km (19 miles) from Angra dos Reis, where the Angra 2 nuclear power plant is located. Following an intense fire exchange with the gunmen, the officers, none of whom were injured, managed to thwart the assault, police said."

Read previous entries here and here, the street-gang as a threat to the internal security of many nations and also the street-gang as having an international dimension in addition.

STREET-GANGS THEIR MOTIVATION AS THEY EVOLVE NOT STRICTLY MONETARY. THE DESIRE FOR POLITICAL CONTROL AT SOME POINT BECOMES A MAJOR CONSIDERATION!

Nuclear fuel [not weapons grade uranium] either for: 1. Sale on the international black market. 2. A means to intimidate the Brazilian government. Construct the dirty bomb [radiological device] and threaten detonation of same. INTIMIDATION!

Attack this time unsuccessful and thank GOD for it. Next time? Beware!

Three-fold.

This is coolbert:

NOT just pantomime?

"India, Pakistan threatened to unleash missiles at each other: sources"

Thanks to the tip from Freeper the original story as obtained from Reuters.

Closed to the nuclear holocaust than thought? From Freeper and copied more or less in entirety.

"The sparring between India and Pakistan last month threatened to spiral out of control and only interventions by U.S. officials, including National Security Advisor John Bolton, headed off a bigger conflict, five sources familiar with the events said."

"At one stage, India threatened to fire at least six missiles at Pakistan, and Islamabad said it would respond with its own missile strikes 'three times over', according to Western diplomats and government sources in New Delhi, Islamabad and Washington.

"The way in which tensions suddenly worsened and threatened to trigger a war between the nuclear-armed nations shows how the Kashmir region, which both claim and is at the core of their enmity, remains one of the world’s most dangerous flashpoints."

"flashpoint - n - 1. something that causes violence or conflict to flare up 2. a critical moment beyond which a situation will inevitably erupt into violence"

Missiles "unleashed" does not necessarily mean missiles with an atomic warhead? Or I am being overly optimistic and naive?

Omissions.

This is coolbert:

Euro Army. Euro Corps. Euro Force.

Pie-in-the-sky?

From an article as seen at the Internet web site "As I Please" of Martin van Creveld the topic of which is an European Army.

"From NATO to EUA (European Union Army)?"

Macron of France and Merkel of Germany having both proposed and endorsed a transnational European army independent of NATO and capable of totally independent military action.

"The idea of a united Europe, complete with a united European army, goes back at least as far as Napoleon. Not to mention Charlemagne a thousand years previously. In a certain way, Napoleon did in fact adopt the concept."

Read the whole thing.

At least from my perspective Van Creveld fails to list two serious impediments for the EUA to exist as a viable and serious military force. Impediments of a much more profound nature not easily to be overcome if at all.

1. Financing.

Those nations part and parcel of the EUA will need to markedly increase their defense spending beyond what already is the case. CONVENTIONAL WAR-MAKING IS EXPENSIVE AND THOSE NATIONS OF NATO ALREADY UNWILLING OR UNABLE TO MEET SPENDING GOALS.

2. Nuclear weaponry.

France and England [assuming the British become part of the EUA] at the present have a very small strategic atomic force. And at least to my knowledge little if ANY tactical nuclear weapons as that term "tactical" understood. An EUA will require a ROBUST nuclear potential way beyond what already exists. Politically again from my perspective the European Union any decision to go atomic in a much bigger manner is dead-on-arrival as they say.

Am I wrong about all this? Devoted readers to the blog let me hear from you. Thanks in advance.

Mini-Harpy.

This is coolbert:

SEAD = Suppression Enemy Air Defense.

Devoted readers to the blog will understand fully well my instantaneous response to the South Front Internet web site headline:

"Israeli Defense Firm Released Video Showing Destruction Of S-400 Radar"

Rest assured [?] devoted readers to the blog that no such attack has actually occurred. A Russian S-400 surface-air-missile [SAM] battery has NOT been destroyed.

See this You Tube video of Israeli anti-radiation munitions as capable of destroying a Russian S-400 SAM battery.

Harop, Harpy and Mini-Harpy. Israeli drone UAV each and everyone a dedicated to the SEAD mission. The latter an anti-radiation drone with loitering feature. Anti-radiation [radar homing] with an additional opto-electronic guidance feature.

Russia too having just announced a new UAV drone with "kamikaze" like performance. Undoubtedly too KUB the mission of which probably also SEAD.

But once more devoted readers to the blog. Israeli having the ability to destroy the S-400 SAM system but has NOT actually done so. If and when such an eventuality does occur it is going to be front-page news and big time.

Renewal.

This is coolbert:

We've only just begun?

The India/Pakistan crisis/skirmish not over?

Once more from the latest edition of the DEBKAfile newsletter:

"India and Pakistan on alert to renew Kashmir skirmishes"

14 March.

"Western intelligence sources report that India and Pakistan are bracing for a resumed round of hostilities over Kashmir. On Thursday, both air forces were on high war readiness. On Wednesday, the Indian air force downed two Pakistani drones over the Indian side of Kashmir. The Pakistani air force is reported to have moved its entire fleet of F-16 fighter bombers to bases close to the Indian border and placed them on the ready."

Pantomime not over? More rituals forthcoming? That is what this all seems to me.

This is coolbert:

From the latest edition of the DEBKAfile newsletter:

"US military buildup in Iraq via Israel and Jordan ready for clash with pro-Iranian Iraqi militias"

9 March.

"US troop reinforcements were flown in from Jordan and Israel to northern Iraq and eastern Syria on Wednesday, March 6 ready for an offensive by Iraq’s two largest pro-Iranian militias on US bases there. The next day, when those militias called for 'resistance to US presence in the region,' American forces in the Gulf region and southern Europe, particularly in Romania and Bulgaria, were also placed on high readiness. The US command in the region estimates that those militias have been deployed by their commander, Al Qods chief Gen. Qassem Solemani, to positions in Syria as well as Iraq"

Duckworth.

This is coolbert:

Senator Tammy Duckworth. Disabled combat veteran and now Senator from Illinois. Thanks to the article by Lynn Sweet as extracted from the Chicago Sun Times newspaper.

"Sen. Duckworth warns military may find itself short of recruits"

"WASHINGTON — Wounded Iraq war vet Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., a new member of the Armed Services Committee, on Wednesday warned that the military may find itself short of recruits."

"But the pool of potential recruits, she said, could be expanded if more youths were physically fit; non-citizen immigrants were welcomed; and discrimination against transgender troops ended."

“Recently, for example, the Pentagon announced that only 29 percent of Americans between the ages of 17 and 24 are considered fit to serve. Just 29 percent. The other 71 percent either failed the basic math or English tests or could not pass a physical or were barred from enlisting because they made a mistake years ago that still lies on their record. Like getting caught with marijuana in a state where it’s now legal or once struggling with an opioid addiction."

"Some 27 percent of potential recruits are cut because they are overweight."

Comments:

* Non-citizens have always been able to join the USA military. You go to the local embassy in your home country and speak to the military attache and express your interest. Follow all legalities.

* Hardly is going to allow transgender troops or serve going to solve the problem of recruitment shortfall. That percentage of the population identifying as transgender and eligible to enlist less than 1 % of the youth cohort I might think.

"cohort - - noun - - 2b : a group of individuals having a statistical factor"

* Youthful indiscretions are often taken into account  during the recruitment process. Habitual indiscretions often also a sign of character weakness.

Got Gold? Hoax? Fake news? Fooled you? Shame on you?

"The 'diary of SS Officer Egon Ollenhauer' said to contain details of a special operation approved by Adolf Hitler to hide some 260 truckloads of gold bars, coins, valuables and priceless artwork at nearly a dozen discreet locations across Poland in the closing months of World War 2 simply isn't credible"

2. "Syria Accuses US Stole 40+ Tons of Its Gold"

"The sources said that tens of tons that Daesh [Islamic State] had been keeping in their last hotbed in al-Baghouz area in Deir Ezzor countryside have been handed to the Americans, adding up to other tons of gold that Americans have found in other hideouts for Daesh, making the total amount of gold taken by the Americans to the US around 50 tons"

Kami-kaze.

This is coolbert:

From the Internet web site Quora the question is asked and answered.

"How effective were the Japanese Kamikaze pilots against the U.S navy during WWII?"

THE CONSENSUS [?] IS THAT THE SUICIDE ATTACK OF THE JAPANESE KAMIKAZE WAS:

"Initially effective, then became increasingly ineffective as the war progressed"

"According to a wartime Japanese propaganda announcement, the missions sank 81 ships and damaged 195"

Depending on who your source is the numbers of American naval vessels sunk or damaged by kamikaze attacks vary:

* "more than 70 U.S. vessels were 'sunk or damaged beyond repair'"

* "attackers sank 34 Navy ships, damaged 368 others"

* "a total of 57 ships sunk by kamikazes"

* "47 ships known to have been sunk by kamikaze aircraft."

From the Internet web site Zero Hedge and the article by Tyler Durden

"Army recruiters are having a challenging time convincing Americans born between 1995 and 2005 to sign up and serve. The situation is so dire that Army Recruiting Command has turned to e-Sports video game tournaments."

Sponsoring video game tournaments is an effort to boost recruitment after the Army fell short of its 76,500 recruitment goal by 6,500 people last year."

"However, there is a problem: 'Health-Risk Correlates of Video-Game Playing Among Adults' study shows that video gamers in America are overweight and depressed."

ONLY one-quarter [25 %] of American youth able mentally and physically eligible for military enlistment by current standards. Deficiencies of a physical [overweight] and mental [educationally lacking] nature combined with drug use and criminal record precluding enlistment.

"11 real-life sci-fi weapons that are the future of war"

"Technology has drastically changed the way we wage war in the modern world. The days of two masses of humanity standing in parallel lines and charging at each other have been replaced by asymmetric deployments, cyber attacks, and guerrilla warfare."

* Liquid metal missiles. MAHEM!!

"The Magneto Hydrodynamic Explosive Munition (MAHEM) is a weapon being developed by DARPA that would utilize molten metal to penetrate enemy armor. The molten metal would be propelled by electromagnetic fields from explosions. The munition would be delivered to a target as a warhead 'packaged into a missile, projectile or other platform.' It would penetrate the armor of an enemy vehicle then explode when it gets inside, destroying the vehicle from the inside out. DARPA predicts the weapon will have greater efficiency, control, and precision than conventional explosively formed penetrators."

THIS SOUNDS TOO MUCH LIKE THE SHAPED-CHARGE WEAPON THAT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR SOME TIME NOW. BUT MAHEM IS NOT THE SAME FOR SOME REASON? SHAPED-CHARGED DESTROYS FROM THE OUTSIDE-IN WHEREAS MAHEM "PENETRATES" INTACT AND DESTROYS FROM THE INSIDE-OUT? IS THAT IT?

Centrifugal.

This is coolbert:

Centrifugal gun. "Pushing the limit."

Firepower plus stealth! Indeed!

Never even heard of this before. The future however is now?

Continuing as extracted from the original article by Geek.com some items of interest.

Weapons of the science-fiction variety hardly science-fiction.

"11 real-life sci-fi weapons that are the future of war"

Technology has drastically changed the way we wage war in the modern world. The days of two masses of humanity standing in parallel lines and charging at each other have been replaced by asymmetric deployments, cyber attacks, and guerrilla warfare.

* Centrifugal gun.

"This has been developed to move the world on from the traditional method of placing explosives into a tube and out into the air at a target. Centrifugal powered guns have been developed, similar to machine guns except that they use centrifugal force and can emit more than 100,000 rounds each second."

See these You Tube video the topic is the centrifugal gun:

But with all the apparent advantages as of this particular instant the centrifugal gun has not found a valid application in warfare?

A WEAPON OF THE FUTURE AND ALWAYS WILL BE?

"Technology has drastically changed the way we wage war in the modern world. The days of two masses of humanity standing in parallel lines and charging at each other have been replaced by asymmetric deployments, cyber attacks, and guerrilla warfare."

* Thunder generator.

"It has already been used by Israel’s military for a few years now as a deterrent weapon and was originally used to scare birds away from crops. It fires shock waves into the air and is a force strong enough to knock targets back and deafen people who are 100 feet away"

Gulls at a garbage dump scared away [at least temporarily by the thunder generator. Israeli Air force [IAF] having more planes brought down by BASH incident than by combat with an enemy!!

Fish-eating birds devouring prey at an aqua-culture fish bond scared away they thunder generator.

Thunder generator used at close range against a cardboard box. Would make the target uncomfortable I am sure but is not lethal nor causing debilitating injury.

Hardly at this exact moment the "thunder" generator a weapon of war except in the most peripheral manner. Not able to stun or kill an adversary, turning the foe on the battlefield to mush on the inside.

At least not yet!

Staggering.

This is coolbert:

EVEN THE CHINESE! EVEN THEM!

From WIZARD though Harry at Sharkhunters:

"IN ‘LOVE’ WITH ONE’S SELF - Alarm bells are ringing within security circles in China over the condition of potential army recruits, with the Ministry of Defence reporting a 'staggering' increase in physical examination failures among hopefuls. Habits such as excessive masturbation and an over indulgence in soft drinks have been pinpointed as reasons for a poor crop of youths trying out for the China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA)."

"Meanwhile, a dependence on mobile and computer devices accounted for 46 per cent of army trialist failures, with the fixation on screens apparently hampering their depth of vision."

Chinese PLA during the initial stages of the Korean War their reputation very good. Probably the BEST light infantry in the world.

Lots of money, lots of material goods, lots of self-indulgence and a bunch of just plain ordinary bad habits has weakened the Chinese young man. Chinese young bucks of military age WEAK in comparison to their grandfathers.  And MARKEDLY SO!

Young men of military age unable to pass a routine recruit physical exam a WORLDWIDE phenomenon and must be recognized as so!

The GOOD TIMES have been had by one and all. With disastrous results for military recruitment.

Gorshkov.

This is coolbert:

Courtesy the tip from Jay Big Red on the move. Oceanic style. Russian warships transit the English channel.

"Russian cruise missile frigate, group of Northern Feet ships enter English Channel"

"This is the first voyage for the frigate Admiral Gorshkov"

"MOSCOW, March 5. /TASS/. The Russian missile frigate Admiral Gorshkov, the multifunctional logistics support vessel Elbrus, the rescue tug Nikolai Chiker and the sea tanker Kama are passing through the English Channel, the press service of the Russian Northern Fleet reports."

. . . .

"In the next few months, the ships’ crews will be performing long-distance voyage missions in various parts of the World Ocean. The voyage aims to demonstrate the Russian Navy’s flag and provide for naval presence in operational areas of the long-distance oceanic zone."

SHOW THE FLAG! POWER PROJECTION WITH GLOBAL GEO-POLITICAL MACHINATIONS IN MIND!

Historically the British very antsy and on-edge when it come to the presence of naval vessels of hostile foreign powers in the English channel. Think the Spanish Armada, the Channel Dash, Dogger Bank and the most recently the Admiral Kuznetsov.

"ant·sy. - - ADJECTIVE. NORTH AMERICAN. informal: agitated, impatient, or restless."

British not fearful but concerned? It is just a normal training and operational exercise? Right?

PMC MIAMI.

This is coolbert:

PMC = Private Military Contractor.

From the article as seen at the Internet web site Zero Hedge and the article by Tyler Durden thanks to the tip from Jay.

"Welcome To MIAMI: Military Intervention And Mercenaries Inc."

"Now home to thousands of limited liability corporations linked to the CIA, as well as private military contractors, sketchy airlines flying from remote Florida airports, the interventionist US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), and exiled oligarchs running destabilization operations in their native countries, Miami – or MIAMI, 'Military Intervention and Mercenaries, Inc.' – serves as the nexus for current Trump administration 'regime change' efforts."

See from the wiki further info PMC recent and ancient:

Giovanni would feel right at home within the ranks of MIAMI? Perhaps even a commander? I do think so.

Simple.

This is coolbert:

Yet more items of interest from WIZARD through Harry at Sharkhunters.

"PTSD REPAIR - A simple course of antibiotics could dramatically reduce the distress experienced by people suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a new trial has found. The discovery by University College London gives hope of better treatment for thousands of soldiers and victims of violence afflicted by the condition. Researchers identified 'matrix enzymes', crucial for the formation of memories, and realized that a course of commonly available doxycycline could target the enzymes and reduce the fear response triggered by remembering traumatic events by as much as 60 per cent."

SEEMS WAY TO SIMPLE. REDUCTION OF 60 % OF SYMPTOMS BY SIMPLE APPLICATION OF A MEDICATION? IF SO, THIS COULD BE MAJOR!

"DON’T CUT BUDGET - A leading US general warned yesterday against cost cuts to Britain’s armed forces as the new defence secretary made his first outing on the world stage. Gavin Williamson joined defence ministers from 28 other member states, including James Mattis, his US opposite number, for two days of meetings at NATO headquarters in Brussels."

F-117.

This is coolbert:

Gone but not forgotten? But not so gone?

Nighthawk F-117 to the rescue Syria? From the Russian controlled [?] media outlet Sputnik.

"Decommissioned F-117 Nighthawks Were Used in Syria, Iraq in 2017 – Report"

"The once famous F-117 stealth attack jets were decommissioned several years after one was shot down over Yugoslavia in March 1999 by a Soviet-made S-125 missile defense system and after the F-22 took over some of the F-117's roles, when precision strikes were deemed essential for a mission."

"Four of the now decommissioned attack jets F-117 Nighthawk [brought back into service and] were deployed for operations in the Middle East in 2017 due to an 'operational need' that emerged"

OPERATIONAL NEED THE DROPPING OF SMALL DIAMETER BOMB [SDB] AS DESCRIBED IN THE SPUTNIK ARTICLE.

SDB effective within the context of irregular warfare the desire to limit deaths to civilians and avoid as much collateral damage as possible. It maybe the F-22 is unable to carry SDB internally? Nighthawk filled the void? F-117 carries payload internally so it appears.

Type 26.

This is coolbert:

More from WIZARD thanks and through Harry at Sharkhunters.

British Royal Navy [RN] stuff this time.

Warships armed to the teeth but without teeth?

"EMPTY MISSILE TUBES – Still happening England; the Type 26 Frigate fleet will be armed with Sea Ceptor [Sea Captor, CAMM] missiles with additional types to be carried decided at a later date. 'A navy programme to build a fleet of new warships at a cost of £8bn [$11 billion USD] it emerged the ships would have missile-launching tubes — but Britain has no missiles to fire from them.'”

Type 26 STILL will have considerable armaments even minus CAMM? A variety of anti-ship missiles and a naval gun of the five inch [127 mm] variety. Sea Captor is strictly [?] surface-air?

RN personnel however will now be able to wear the high-neck sweaters off-duty now?

coolbert.

Terminate.

This is coolbert:

Terminate with extreme prejudice! Kill!

From WIZARD through Harry at Sharkhunters.

The English army has just won the war?

1. "BAD COMPLEXIONS…..OUT! - Over 14,000 British Army applicants are said to have been declined for having acne and minor food allergies over the course of the last couple of years, in line with strict Ministry of Defence [MoD] rules."

2. "BRITISH ARMY DRASTIC FORCE REDUCTION - The British Army is reportedly facing cuts that would see it reduced to numbers last seen more than 200 years ago. Three funding plans drawn up by military bigwigs have been described by a Whitehall source. The proposed plans include cutting the army by 11,000 soldiers, [additionally] giving 2,000 Royal Marines and sailors the boot."

3. "NO MORE FRIENDLY FIRE? - British troops will soon wear new ‘Terminator’ kit that tracks their location and that of the enemy in a move that will ‘revolutionise’ urban warfare and help prevent accidental deaths."

"Soldiers will use lasers on their weapons and audio sensors to share the location of enemy fighters firing at them with the rest of their unit so they can kill them quicker without being seen."

Weight.

This is coolbert:

Within context to the previous blog entry and from a conversation [edited to an extent at my discretion] with an acknowledged aviation authority:

"When I flew Fox 4s [Phantom F-4], I weighed 143 lbs. [sixty-five kilo grams stripped as they say sans equipment] — every day for the entire time I flew. But weight wasn’t a factor for the lightweights amongst us, as the survival gear [during combat air missions] we always wore added significantly to our weight. When I weighed myself fully equipped for a combat mission, I tipped the scales at 205 lbs. [ninety-five kilo grams]. Stateside, where I didn’t carry so [much survival gear] . . . my weight in the US minus all that [impedimenta] was probably only around 160-170 lbs. [seventy-five kilo grams]."

Survival gear as noted during combat air missions to include:

* Survival handguns + ammo for same.
* Grenades.
* Knives.
* Rations.
* Medical gear.
* Survival radios and batteries for same.

Those persons overweight the solution for the "patient" under the care of a military medical professional to subsist on a controlled diet of three hard-boiled eggs per day all the while drinking copious amounts of water. Weight reduction fast!

And thank you acknowledged aviation authority. You input greatly appreciated.

coolbert.

Eject!

This is coolbert:

Devoted readers to the blog will understand I was onto this one right away.

Best categorized as being in the strange but true category?

More problems for the F-35.

From Strategy page and the article found at same.

"Attrition: RAF Pays For A Weighty Problem"

"March 2, 2019: Martin-Baker, the British firm that pioneered the ejection seat and is the largest supplier, has another weight problem with its popular Mk16 model used in F-35 fighters. The British RAF (Royal Air Force) found it has a problem with some potential F-35 pilots being too heavy to use the Mk16. The current upper weight limit for the Mk16 is 111.3 kg (245 pounds) but that means some RAF pilots are going to have to lose weight or the Mk16 seat must be modified. Western pilots (the main users of Martin-Baker seats) have been getting heavier over the last half century and the upper weight limit for pilots has increased 25 percent."

Weighty for those non-native English speakers in the figurative sense as meaning: "weighty - - 1a : of much importance or consequence : momentous"

A BAD ASPECT OF AMERICAN CULTURE AS INTRODUCED INTO FOREIGN NATIONS THE OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY PROBLEM! TOO MUCH McDONALD'S BIG MAC MEALS.

Good luck with this one English.

Boys beware!

Electronic-counter measures NATO! Directed against NATO by NATO!

Consider this blog entry to be so apropos within context of a most recent blog entry:

"NATO Tricks Own Troops Into Spilling Sensitive Data Using Facebook, Instagram"

"The alliance decided to test how well prepared its soldiers are for the evolving methods of espionage in the world of modern technology and social media by using fake accounts and social engineering."

THIS HAS BEEN A POPULAR TOPIC FOR BLOG ENTRIES. MALWARE AS DOWNLOADED ONTO SMART PHONES AND OTHER INTERNET CONNECTED DEVICES ALLOW A HOSTILE FOREIGN INTELLIGENCE ENTITY TO SPY ON THE INDIVIDUAL TROOP EFFECTIVELY AND SURREPTITIOUSLY. YOUR SMART PHONE HIJACKED AND BEING USED AGAINST YOU!

NATO personnel presumably having been forewarned the object of this exercise [electronic-counter measures] to test the real-world adherence to the security rules as stated by higher command.

AND HOW WELL IS NATO DOING? WE SHALL HARDLY EVER KNOW I THINK.

Winter.

This is coolbert:

Small-scale they call it.

We are back to the future. Nuclear winter deja vu all over again?

And is relevant to the ongoing India-Pakistani crisis.

"How a nuclear war between India and Pakistan could reverse global warming"

"We're at a scary moment internationally as tensions escalate between the nuclear powers of India and Pakistan, and we should all be praying for things to calm down. In addition to the horrible death toll and humanitarian crisis that would follow, according to scientists, a small-scale nuclear war could actually reverse global warming and actually cause devastating global cooling."

This is similar to the Nuclear Winter hypothesis as was the rage over thirty years ago now.

This particular You Tube video describes the exact scenario of a nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan! Detonation of hundreds of atomic warheads [a nuclear exchange between Pakistan and India] of the Hiroshima size [twenty kilotons] within the time span of a few hours to several days at the most. Cooling on a planetary scale with world-wide devastation as a result!! Not even counting radioactivity.

AS I RECALL IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT THE MORE OR LESS SIMULTANEOUS DETONATION OF A THOUSAND HIROSHIMA-SIZED ATOMIC WEAPONS WOULD CAUSE IRREPARABLE HARM ON A GLOBAL-SCALE!

India and Pakistan between them have less than half that number of a thousand nuclear warheads? So we are good to go then?

coolbert.

Encounters.

This is coolbert:

Crisis between India and Pakistan not simply relegated to air strikes and air combat activity. Ground units also involved.

As reported by Russian controlled [?] sources.

1. "De-escalation delayed: India & Pakistan exchange shelling on Kashmir border, casualties reported"

"Just a day after an Indian pilot was freed from Pakistani captivity, offering hope for de-escalation, the two countries resumed shelling in Kashmir, killing a number of civilians on both sides, according to local authorities."

2. "Terrorists in India's Kashmir Kill 4 Soldiers, Gun Battle Still Raging - Reports"

"The encounter reportedly broke out at midnight after a joint team of the Indian army's 22 Rashtriya Rifle, 92 Battalion Central Reserve Police Force and local police launched an operation at Khanan Babagund in Langate, acting on a tip-off about the presence of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists in the area."

Dispute and conflict between Indian and Pakistan follows almost a set-piece routine? Incident, followed by retaliation and then counter-retaliation. Tension involving weapons fire between the two adversaries for a period followed by de-escalation and then relative calm. Almost a pantomime ritual but with deaths however.

Kashmir however remains divided as ever with hardly ever it seems any resolution to a seventy year old low-intensity war between two nuclear powers.

coolbert.

Threshold.

This is coolbert:

DEFCON-3.

Will they or won't they? Use atomic weapons!

Thanks to the tip from Paulie and the article by Michael Kugelman

"Opinion: India, Pakistan, and the remote but real threat of nuclear war"

"India and Pakistan are currently embroiled in their most serious crisis in several decades. While a nuclear exchange between the two sides is highly unlikely, the possibility nevertheless remains"

"For years, it’s been a bedrock principle of international security: Possessing nuclear weapons deters nations from using them in warfare. Indeed, since 1945, no country has used one. However, there’s an important caveat to this: Nuclear weapons may forestall nuclear exchanges, but they don’t deter nuclear states from using military force against each other."

PAKISTAN IN CONTRAST TO INDIA SAID TO HAVE A LOW NUCLEAR THRESHOLD!!

MEANING THE PAKISTANI WILL RESORT TO THE USE OF ATOMIC WEAPONS QUICKER AND FOR LESS REASON!!

See from a variety of Internet web sites a discussion of the LOW Pakistani nuclear threshold as perceived:

Surprise.

This is coolbert:

Yet more from the South Asia Terrorism Portal [SATP] as reported the crisis between India and Pakistan as you might well imagine a topic of concern. As copied in entirety and thanks to the Portal:

"Detail Of Terrorism Update - - Wednesday, February 27, 2019"

"Get ready for a ‘surprise’ ISPR DG Major General Asif Ghafoor responded over Indian air strike claim"

"Pakistan on February 26 categorically rejected Indian claim of carrying out an airstrike in the Pakistani territory and killing 350 terrorists, declaring the incursion just a ‘dry run’ that was effectively and immediately repulsed by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), reports Daily Times. 'Today, the prime minister has asked everyone to get ready for every eventuality. We are all ready. Now it is time for India to wait for our response,' Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Major General Asif Ghafoor told a press conference. 'The response will come at a point and time of our choosing, where our civil-military leadership decides, and as a matter of fact, has decided,' he added."
