Mother-Ship.

This is coolbert:

As is germane to the previous blog entry the Russian submarine BS-64 now operational.

BS-64 as understood designated as a "mother-ship". Has an ability to "nest" a much smaller submersible within the underneath of the vessel. That smaller ship as "nested" a research vessel capable of performing a variety of functions.

This image shows the BS-64 with "nested" Losharik. Click on image to see a larger view. BS-64 appears to be with child!

Before there was the BS-64 there was the KS-411.THAT LATTER ORIGINALLY A YANKEE CLASS BALLISTIC MISSILE FIRING SUBMARINE. EXTENSIVE MODIFICATIONS DONE ALSO TO CREATE WHAT IS BEST DESCRIBED AS A "MOTHER-SHIP".

"K-64 was removed from active service in 1999 and was ordered to be refitted. It was planned for her to be reactivated in 2002 to replace the Yankee 'Stretch' class KS-411. KS-411 had been the mother ship for the Paltus-class mini submarines, which are believed to be used for a combination of oceanographic research, search and rescue, and underwater intelligence-gathering."

Click again on image to see an expanded view. Before there was Losharik there was Paltus. Paltus also carried within [?] the underneath of the Yankee class boat. Mission of Paltus also "oceanographic research, search and rescue, and underwater intelligence-gathering".

Paltus and subsequently Losharik both titanium-hulled vessels. First the Soviet and now the Russian excel in the manufacture of such titanium-hulled warships.
