This is coolbert:
Here are the profiles, the real dope, on two Afghan warlords who can play a role in whatever successful negotiations may transpire:
1. Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.
"Gulbuddin Hekmatyar (Pashto: ګلبدین حکمتیار) (born 1947) is an Islamist Mujahideen leader and former warlord. He is the founder and leader of the Hezb-e Islami political party and paramilitary group."
"Hekmatyar has been harshly criticized for his behavior during the Soviet and civil war. At various times, he has both fought against and allied himself with almost every other group in Afghanistan. He ordered frequent attacks on other rival factions to weaken them in order to improve his position in the post-Soviet power vacuum."
AND RIGHT NOW, IS THE ONE MAN WHO IS LEADING THE INSURGENCY IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF AFGHAN!!?? THE ONE MAN ALSO WHO IS WILLING TO NEGOTIATE WITH THE AFGHAN CENTRAL GOVERNMENT OF KARZAI. ARRIVE AT A SOLUTION AMICABLE TO ALL??!!
A MAN - - NOT ABOVE CHANGING SIDES - - HAVING SHIFTING ALLEGIANCES - - OPEN TO TREACHERY WHEN IT SUITS HIS PURPOSES!!??
2. Abdul Rashid Dostum.
"Abdul Rashid Dostum 1954 (age 53–54) was a former Pro-Soviet fighter during the Soviet Invasion and the current leader of Uzbek-Afghan northern provinces. He joined the Afghan military in 1978, fighting with the Soviets and against the mujahideen throughout the 1980s before switching sides and joining the mujahideen. Dostum would again switch sides and has become infamous for his switching of allegiances."
DOSTUM [he likes to refer to himself as General!] HAS CHANGED SIDES DURING THE MANY YEARS OF CONFLICT IN AFGHAN NO LESS THAN NINE TIMES. DONE SO WITHOUT QUALMS, PAYING ATTENTION TO "WHICH WAY THE WIND WAS BLOWING", AND ACTING ACCORDINGLY!!
This is how things happen in this part of the world. Shifting and changing alliances, allegiances, loyalties, all up to negotiations and for the right price, a deal that can be struck??
coolbert.
