Asphyxiation.

This is coolbert:

From the Internet web site English/Russian the World War Two [WW] story of the Ajimshkai quarries. Various spellings of Ajimushkai existing.

"HEROES OF AJIMUSHKAI STONE QUARRIES"

Underground warfare WW2 style. Soviets versus Germans. Soviets besieged for a period of almost six months. Incredible deprivation and sacrifice, almost complete in totality of casualties.

"May, 1942. During fierce fighting the German army conquers the Kerch peninsula. Troops of the Crimean front have to evacuate to the Taman, but a part of the troops defeating a setback and crossing of the major forces find themselves cut-off and have to come down under the ground. That is a beginning of 170-days’ defence of Ajimushkai Stone Quarries."

"That defense, lasting almost six full months, the underground quarry occupied by tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians [figure varies depending on who is doing the counting], only several dozen survivors emerging and taken alive by the German forces."

THAT CONTROVERSIAL ASPECT OF THE SIEGE - - DID OR DID NOT THE GERMAN USE POISON GAS TO SUBDUE THE OCCUPANTS OF THE QUARRY??

GAS OR CHEMICAL WEAPONS OF SOME SORT UNDENIABLY [?] USED BUT GAS AS AN ASPHYXIATION AGENT IS THE QUESTION?

Quarry no longer mined and now and has been for some time a war museum and monument. Entrance to the museum/monument done in the grand Soviet style. Persons as can be seen at the entrance for scale! Click on image to see an larger view.

See from various Internet web sites more information on the siege of the Adzhimushkay quarry:
