This is coolbert:
COTS = "Commercial off-the-shelf or commercially available off-the-shelf (COTS) products are packaged or canned (ready-made) hardware or software, which are adapted aftermarket to the needs of the purchasing organization, rather than the commissioning of custom-made, or bespoke, solutions. A related term, Mil-COTS, refers to COTS products for use by the U.S. military"
Recent attack by Ukrainian USV on the Russian Black Sea fleet as commented on by Commander Salamander.
"The Aspects of the Sevastopol Attack You Need to Focus on"
From cdrsalamander.blogspot.com October 31, 2022.
"We can safely assume . . . that the ones used in the attack are of the same design."
"This is all COTS technology riding on either a canoe or ocean going kayak. If you have someone with an understanding of explosives and communications (the only part requiring military expertise +/-) and then any garden variety electrician, small engine pro, and fiberglass guy ... you can run a production line of these on a shoestring budget at scale."
CHEAP AND DIRTY, CRUDE BUT EFFECTIVE AS THEY SAY! ONE MIGHTY BOOM WITH A DIRECT HIT ON THE VITALS OF AN ENEMY WARSHIP AND THE ENEMY GOES TO THE BOTTOM.
The ultimate in asymmetric warfare? Cost efficiency if and when a major warship sunk by a putt-putt type fast attack unmanned boat almost without measure?
Read the entire Commander article his appreciation and understanding of the USV attack outstanding!
coolbert.
This reminded me the MT explosive boats from the italians in WWII, almost the same idea, updated for current technology. Same goes for the Iranian drones and the V1 flying bomb.
