Movie review.
The movie being reviewed is "Two Women".
Italian production from 1960, in black and white, with English Subtitles.
I RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE HIGHLY WITHOUT QUALIFICATION OR RESERVATION!
It is for her leading role that Sophia Loren won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
With a superb cast, directed and produced by those most esteemed luminaries of European cinema.
Italian mother [Loren] in an attempt to save her daughter from the worst aspects of the Second World War walks right into the maelstrom itself.
"Cesira and her 13-year-old daughter, Rosetta, flee from the allied bombs in Rome during the second world war. They travel to the village where Cesira was born. During their journey and in the village, the mother does everything to protect Rosetta. However, on one occasion they both get raped by soldiers hiding in a church."
That allied offensive the object being the liberation or Rome [1944]. Sophia unwittingly jumping from the proverbial frying pan into the fire.
And as is shown in the movie [at the very end] Loren and her daughter also subjected to the predation of the GOUM. French colonial troops, Berbers from the high Atlas mountains of Morocco.
The goum rapists being allowed fifty hours of liberty to do as they pleased, subsequent to the final capture of Monte Cassino.
Those events and the conduct of the goum being yet one more instance of allied atrocity during WW2.
I had to have my public library locate this movie for me, you will probably have to do the same.
But again is well worth seeing.
coolbert.
Good news, the movie is in the public domain, the English version can in fact be watched or downloaded right here on archive.org!
