This is coolbert:
Movie review.
The movie being reviewed is "Lincoln".
A Spielberg production called a "masterpiece"
Hardly I think a "masterpiece" but very good nonetheless.
I recommend you rent and see this movie.
"As the Civil War continues to rage, America's president struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield and as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on the decision to emancipate the slaves."
Deals with the last several months of the American Civil War and those efforts of the Lincoln administration to:
1. Pass the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in the House of Representatives. [the Senate having passed the amendment the prior year]
2. A negotiated end to the American Civil War with terms .
That number two item I being only aware of from fairly recently.
And an issue I too find to be somewhat surprising.
That negotiated settlement, an end to hostilities subject to the Confederate states in rebellion freeing the slaves and ending the "peculiar" institution.
At that point of the war [January 1865], those secessionist armies on the ropes, being defeated quite handily by the ever burgeoning Union armies. I might have thought unconditional surrender and absolute capitulation of all Confederate forces was NOT only surely possible but seen as eminently desirable.
Lincoln for whatever combination of reasons seems to have thought otherwise.
The proposed negotiated settlement to the war having been offered and Lincoln having personally met with representatives of the South, nothing came of it.
ONLY a few months later the war having come to an end, further protracted fighting and guerrilla warfare not transpiring.
coolbert.
