Almost a tremendous disaster. Only the actions of a single on-the-ball officer prevented a major naval catastrophe. So as reported.

All this as a result of a SINGLE depth gauge failure? And none of the crew or the conn had an inkling the vessel was slowly settling to the abysmal depths?

I can well imagine that such a loss would be the entire question of British nuclear deterrent into question. No need it will be said for another class of ballistic-missile firing submarine to replace the now-aging Vanguard class.
