Indeed, it was probably quite apparent to Hamas that an attack on Israel proper would have met with a very strong response from Israel almost apocalyptic in nature, and that is what is going to occur.

An overwhelming ground attack by Israel with massive loss of life on both sides, civilian and military both. I imagine that Hamas has made extensive preparation for an Israeli ground force attack of whatever size. Lots of strong points, well protected tunnel complexes, land mines, antitank missiles, obstacles and lots of IED.

More than anything else, the inevitable and consequential extreme devastation of urban warfare Gaza will make for very good optics the international media.
