This is coolbert:
"A sickening, overpowering, awful stench announced the presence of the unburied dead upon which the July sun was mercilessly shining and at every step the air grew heavier and fouler until it seemed to possess a palpable horrible density that could be seen and felt and cut with a knife …" - - Cornelia Hancock, Gettysburg, 1863.
As it was during the American Civil War one-hundred and fifty years ago as it is now in Iraq and Syria.

And as most germane to a most recent blog entry:
"The smelly details of the ISIS surrender"
By Monica Showalter
"The Islamic State seems to have come to a particularly wretched end, with the New York Times reporting the surrender of thousands of ISIS fighters, not forgetting to note that it was a smelly ordeal, given that numerous fighters had either soiled themselves or used their desert bathrobes as toilet paper. Eeew. And according to the Times report, at least one of them went to the bathroom on himself without even bothering to wipe up."
ISIL combatants in an unclean state a violation of basic Islamic precepts. Wuḍūʾ as prescribed a necessity for the Muslim. Prayers and other religious obligations and devotions no longer ascending to heaven for those not cleansed.
"Wuḍūʾ is typically done in preparation for formal prayers (salat), and also before handling and reading the Qur'an. Impurifying activities that invalidate wuḍūʾ include urination, defecation, breaking wind, deep sleep, and light bleeding."
