Panfilov.

This is coolbert:

From a recent edition of World War II magazine and as extracted from same:

"Russian Historian Deflates Legend, Career"

"A veteran historian [Russian] who debunked Soviet-era myths about WWII was demoted."

"The Panfilov Division's Twenty-Eight Guardsmen . . . commonly referred to simply as Panfilov's Men . . . were a group of soldiers from the Red Army's 316th Rifle Division who took part in the defense of Moscow during World War II. According to official Soviet history, they were all killed in action on 16 November 1941, after destroying 18 German tanks. The Twenty-Eight were collectively endowed with the title Hero of the Soviet Union. An investigation by Soviet authorities in 1948, since declassified, revealed that the description of the events was not accurate. Not all the twenty eight were killed — six of the soldiers were still alive. One of them was arrested in 1947 on charges of high treason and confessed to having 'voluntarily' surrendered to German troops and later joined a German police force. The findings were kept secret, and the Twenty-Eight Guardsmen were considered national heroes."

"Last year [2015] Sergei Mironenko published declassified 1948 documents proving that the heroics were exaggerated and that some of the supposed martyrs had survived.".

"Mironenko said their actions were not just a myth, but a deliberate 'falsification'. Mironenko also courted controversy last year when he criticized Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin and the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop nonaggression pact with Nazi Germany."

ANY AND ALL CRITICISM OF THE SOVIET WAR EFFORT DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR NOW FORBIDDEN IN RUSSIA BY LAW! TRUTH IS NO DEFENSE IN THIS REGARD!

In this particular instance the exaggeration and myth as created not so excessively so. As I perceive.
